Peas - help

I know nothing, but have graciously been given a sizable area to plant a garden this year. I did a variety of veggies and they are starting to poke up out of the ground now.

Do peas need something to grow up on? What do you use?

Thank you for helping!

You can use something that looks like a fencing panel or something like this

if you want it to look pretty. Pretty much anything with large holes they can grow up. I got a variety this year that say self supporting so I am interested to see if that is true or if they will need a little help.

However, it is pretty late to be planting peas. Peas like the cold weather. Usually you plant peas as early in the spring as possible because they've gone through their cycle by June. Theoretically you can try and grow a later crop in the fall -- plant them in August and have them blossom in Sept/Oct. I've tried that but have never succeeded.

Aw, shucks! Well, we're trying them now. We'll see what they think of the June sunshine! Around here it isn't usually THAT warm, so maybe they'll be okay.

We have some wire fencing we could use like that one picture. Thank you!

An update: the peas did well - I don't know how it worked but somehow the ones my DD planted even seemed to give a second crop (or maybe they just weren't all ready the first time we really picked).
