My 2 yr old in-tact son has a swollew and slightly red penis. The tip is red while the rest looks, for lack of better words, ballooned. He complains when I wipe him and I am not sure what it is or what to do for him. We do not go to doctors because they tend to be very invasive. Can anyone let me know if this is normal for his age or if something may be wrong?

It could be soreness due to a bit of separation and if so expect it to pass in a day or two. Try dropping him in a bath with some baking soda to sooth the irritation. If it is some sort of mild infection it may not go away and you'll have to take him in for a culture and perhaps a prescription. If he has trouble urinating or something take him in to see the doc right away.

There's no trouble with urination, yet. I am going to try the baking soda bath and see if that helps. He is my only son and no one else in our family has intact boys, so I am at a loss for who to talk to. I really appreciate any help I can get!!

My DS had the same kind thing around that age. A bit of swelling and redness, he also had some discharge. But with the baking soda baths and naked time it went away within 2 days. Just keep an eye on it and if it starts to get worse or doesn't get better after two days then I would consider bringing him to a doctor. After he got better he started ballooning when he pee'd which is normal.

This kind of thing is pretty common and almost always clears up in 24-48 hrs. As long as he doesn't develop more severe symptoms, such as fever, just keep an eye on it.

Other symptoms you might see that are associated with harmless separation are smegma discharge (which looks very much like puss, but isn't) and reluctance to pee (don't confuse this with difficulty peeing which is a problem.)

Would giving him probiotics help? I just hate to see him going through something I do not understand!

Possibly. Did the bath help him at all? How long has this been going?

Most likely there isn't anything wrong that needs to be helped by the probiotics. That said, probiotics are generally good for most people, so they shouldn't hurt.

I noticed it this morning when I changed his first diaper and it has been red swollen ever since. The swelling isn't bad but it is noticable. He has been crying and pointing to his penis saying owie. No fever and it is barely red. I am slightly concerned and am against pain medication but am concidering giving him something. Any advice?

So just to condense everything so I and others have it all in front of us:

1. Started this morning.
2. No fever.
3. No difficulty urinating.
4. Definite general discomfort.
5. A bit red and a bit swollen.

It sounds like a bit of separation to me. Typically this is a 24-48hr thing and the best advice that I have was the bath though (and I'd like someone else to second this) perhaps some anti-inflammatory such as Tylenol might help.

Correct! Minus the tylenol because the swelling isn't that bad and he is running and playing fine most of the time. Thank you all so very much for the help! I love this website and have used it since the birth of my first child.

caden has had that a couple of times and it never caused any bother and just cleared up by it's self.

Oh I thought you suggested some pain medication, Tylenol was my suggestion as a possible option. It should reduce the soreness and inflammation. Unless someone here thinks that would be a bad idea. You would probably have to check with your pedi first though.

Tylenol won't help with inflammation, it's not an aniti-inflammatory. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory. I think tylenol is probably an ok choice for pain relief, I just wanted to mention that it is not anti-inflammatory.
