CI surgery was yesterday.....

The surgery went extremely well, but yesterday was a disaster. Lani was throwing up blood all night and keeps getting bloody noses even today. She also has two black eyes. Also they didn't get a response at all from either nerves so the surgery might have been for nothing We won't know for sure until activation on the 30th so we are trying to keep our hopes up. But on a brighter note, today she seems to be in minimal pain and has been playing normally all day

they shaved off her sweet baby curls

My daughter's surgeon shaves a lot too. He makes a BIG scar, but he has a very low complication rate because of it.

This is the hardest part. When you see your baby all cut and hurting, it is hard not to wonder if it will be worth it. It will!!! You are giving your baby the gift of sound and options in the future.

Have you seen a developmental specialist? What do they think is an appropriate goal for your daughter, as far as spoken language goes?

Oh no, I'm sorry that she had a rough day yesterday!! Poor Lani, and poor mama!! I don't know much about the actual surgery, is it common to have bloody noses and black eyes? I would think that's not common because the incision is behind the ear...? So glad that she's feeling better today. I'm sorry about her hair Luckily she's too young to be bothered by it, hopefully her hair will grow back quickly.

Gosh, I hope it works!! Every child I know that's had it done had very good response to it, except for one little girl who has decent hearing with her implant, but still no real spoken language three years later (they're working on getting her a diagnosis, obviously there's something other than just deafness, but no one knows what exactly).

Happy Healing, Lani!!! I can't wait for your activation date!!

Well I know the black eyes are from electrodes they had on her. They had needles through the nerve of the eyelids to make sure that her facial nerves didn't get messed up. She also had one on her throat so now it looks like she got punched in the throat. I just wasn't expecting to see that when she woke up! The bloody noses they have no idea except for maybe getting too dry with the anesthesia? But they didn't have any oxygen in her nose. They think part of if might be from her ears draining to her nose and then down her stomach (which is causing her to vomit blood). But thankfully that stopped yesterday! We now have to get our couch cleaned :/ She is pretty happy today though. Been playing hard all day and doesn't seem to be in very much pain so that is good.

I just hope that this wasn't all for nothing. Let's pray that they work!

Black eyes, bloody noses and throwing up blood are all perfectly fine. I know it doesn't feel like it, but it is normal. The black eyes are from the surgery, the blood is just draining from the inner ear into the nose and stomach. It looks much worse than it is!

So glad she is having a good day today!

My Aidan had the bloody nose with the 2nd, but not the first surgery. It's all so scary, not knowing what is normal and what needs to be checked out. I think it isn't unusual to not have a nerve reponse during the test, just have to wait and see what happens at activation. How long do you have to wait for them to be turned on?
