I read Steve Solomon's "Gardening When It Counts" last fall and really liked it. I had planned to clear some land for a garden last fall, but we're still working on getting into the house, so it looks like we won't have a garden until next summer. We have enough acreage to have a big garden, but most of it is covered with trees at the moment.

While I'm still in the planning stages for our big vegetable garden, I'd like to find some people who have actual experience trying this widely-spaced, less-irrigation method. How has it worked for you?

I live in coastal southern New England, border of Zone 6/7. Our winters are moderately cold (avg. annual low between 0 and 10, sometimes less, sometimes more), and spring comes late here (leaves were out on the oak trees in late May this year, but usually it's early June. Soil is sandy, summers are usually nice and not too hot.

I'm also planning to use some of Eliot Coleman's 4-season gardening advice, he seems to be popular around here.
