new here.. sorry long

Ok so I pulled out all of my birth books last night. I have to admit that I bought them after my last pregnancy and so I've never actually read any of them.. Now I have a good 6 or 7 books that i'd love to read before the end of this pregnancy. I'm 24 weeks so i do have time since i'll be no longer working as of next friday. (thanks to BP and the oil spill) anyway i was just wondering if there was a better order to read these in or if some were more helpful in case I don't get to read them all.

I have these:
Ina May's guide to a better birth
dr sears birth book
birthing from within
painless childbirth
thinking woman's guide to a better birth
the birth partner (i skimmed through last pregnancy but don't remember it)

I've been contemplating having a UC with this baby but want as much info beforehand if possible and really not finding much. I think i've already got it in my head to UC I just want the info now. I've been lurking here for a while now.

I had DD natural but in a birth center. I wanted to HB but couldn't get anyone to attend and didn't want to UC at the time (4 years ago). my mom and aunt had all of us (3 kids each) by UC so not a foreign concept to me just was nervous since it was my first birth. The birth center I went to however was very hands off. I got 3 vagi checks the whole time (one when i showed up, one when i felt like pushing, and one briefly after since i wasn't a full "10". I also spent the labor in the tub and didn't have to worry about much else just a little monitoring when pushing nothing too bad though.

I've since moved to another state and they're not so NCB friendly. (c/s rate for the state is like 32%) And I know i can do it. My labor from start to finish with dd was 5ish hours. So I can easily play off that baby came to fast since i live 30 minutes from my delivering hospital. I really hate the hospitals here and if for nothing else I don't think i could birth a baby with needles in my arm (required by the hospital to have at least a heplock).

My main concern really is finding info on what to do in case of complications vs emergencies. and just for some of the basic stuff..
DF doesn't care one way or another where i birth but he's not one to really read up on stuff to be prepared. I'm searching for sites on info but only finding birth stories. I need info on what to do in case xyz happens for anything that could happen. I know i'm asking alot.

Sorry for such a rambling hopefully it makes sense.

Hi I'm new too. I'm 18 weeks with #2 and planning to UC. My reasons are similar to yours although the hospitals where I am aren't as pushy... I just don't like hospitals and I can't afford a midwife.

Anyways I've been going back through the treads since the beginning and I have found a TON of great information. Such as what supplies to have on hand, books to read, etc. It's great. I'm really happy to have found this forum because its totally easing my mind. Plus I was getting a lot of crap about it from a local mommy forum I'm on... Ugh! People and their darn negativity.

Good luck with your research and please post anything interesting or worth knowing that you find!!!

I would check out Emergency Childbirth-Gregory White and Unassisted Childbirth- Laura Shanley.

Good Luck

I second the PP

The only actual 'literature' I read was:

[I]Unassisted Childbirth[I] Laura Shanley
Emergency Childbirth Gregory White

Otherwise I read a lot of positive birth stories and just really focused on being very "tuned-in" to my body and my baby.

Good Luck. It was the best experience of my life.

There were 3 books I had on hand(I was planning on becoming a mw even then(1989) Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin(the second half of the book is a midwifery manual)
Heart and Hands by Elizabeth Davis
and Myles Midwifery by Margaret Myles(she was a British mw). I had my second at home with mw, and the third was UC. the Myles book helped me the most. Still do...
