Prozac conception, pregnancy, breastfeeding ?'s

I posted this thread a while back.... and after much deliberation I finally started on Prozac. This is only my fifth day and I'm still only taking 10mg. I was prescribed 20mg after a week or so but if I continue to feel good I may just stay at 10mg. So far I really like it and its helping tremendously w/ my anxiety.

But I'd like to hear more about other women's experiences on Prozac: specifically conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding information and experiences.

Also, from what I understand Prozac is a good choice for pregnancy but not great for nursing (Zoloft is better).... as anyone made the switch from Prozac to Zoloft at the end of a pregnancy? Has anyone stayed on Prozac during their breastfeeding relationship?

anyhow, I think you all get my drift here : ) I just want to hear your Prozac stories...

Thanks

I was on Prozac for about 5 months before we conceived through my pg. I stopped at 38 weeks, I think. I was going to start again at 3-4 weeks PP, but didn't feel like I needed it anymore.

We conceived our first month trying. I had a very uneventful pg. I Also BFed for 6 months and had no issues.

I didn't have any issues while being on it. I think it served its purpose and I'm glad I had the help for the time I needed it.

I wonder how much they really know about the risks of taking these types of medications while pregnant.

this is about antidep in general during pregnancy

there are always risks with any drug...you just need to weigh the cost vs the benefit. Many women have taken prozac while pregnant with no problems. I think taking any drug while pregnant may increase the likelyhood of problems, but it is not a given of course.

For anyone who comes across this thread and may need this information I'll post this here too...

I just read this book:

Pregnant on Prozac: The Essential Guide to Making the Best Decision for You and Your Baby
by Dr. Shoshana S. Bennett

:and it has been a fantastic help! Oh, and it's not just about Prozac - that's just the catchy title.

She has done extensive research and weighs the risks of not taking a drug when you are ill versus the drugs themselves, and it's almost always healthier for mom and baby to be on a drug than to be experiencing a mood disorder like depression or anxiety. Depression and anxiety are illnesses like any other, and, left untreated, can have consequences for mom and baby that are far worse than a drug.

Would you not treat high blood pressure because you had to take a drug, even though studies show it would be better for you and the baby to be on the drug than not? It's the same thing with depression and anxiety. They are health issues and need to be treated as such.
