Help! Penis infection? UTI? Just normal? Cleaning?

Ds is 4

For the past week or two he has been complaining off and on about his penis being itchy. (Well, mainly i've been asking him why he's grabbing himself so much...he doesn't usually do that THAT much...and he says he was itchy)

Also, the past week or two he has suddenly started having to pee EVERY night and can't make it through the night. Sometimes he wakes his dad and they go to the toilet and sometimes he wets his trainer. Sometimes he wets his trainer and bit and gets the rest in the toilet. Up until now he has been able to make it the whole 12 hours and just pee in the morning without much wetting his trainer at all.

The whole area looks sort of redish, but not a really bright red.

Yesterday he told me it hurts when he pees sometimes, but that he "doesn't mind".

I saw some things on normal seperating of the foreskin and how it can cause seperation trauma, but this seems to be going on longer timewise than that.

I'm pretty sure he can retract the foreskin quite far as I've seen him do it while sitting on the toilet.

I haven't ever had him retract and wash while he is in the bath and I wondered if maybe he should do that if he can retract it at this point? Have I not been having him keep it clean enough? At this point is there a buildup of smegma under there that could be itching him?

I'm concerned about this because of the peeing at night, redness, itchiness and a little bit of hurting when he pees. I wonder if it is a combination of things or an actual infection.

He is quite scared about going to a doctor (and I'm not really sure how they could help much as I don't like doing much medication...). He doesn't seem to want to tell me the truth because he's afraid I'll take him to the doctor so it's difficult to find out exactly what is going on.

I'm wondering if it's a yeast issue.

I'm thinking about having him take a baking soda bath. Maybe I'll squirt some breastmilk on it. That couldnt' hurt anything. Maybe some coconut oil?

Have you read this sticky http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=764732

Separation issues can go on for months and sometimes even longer.

The extra peeing at night could just be him drinking more and being more hydrated. A UTI wont manifest in soreness of the penis it will be pain while urinating in the abdomen.

The only thing a Dr. could do would be to take a culture of the tip of the foreskin with no retraction and see what if anything grows. Past that they cant tell by looking and they definitely shouldnt mess with his foreskin at all.

Cleaning should consist of swishing in the bath and asking him if he wants to retract and swish in the tub if he dosnt no worries if he does it is good practice for the future either way it isnt something that is needed until puberty kicks in.

It sounds kind of like yeast to me. The extra peeing at night might be b/c the general itchyness is triggering the need to pee sensation. I'd start by treating it as yeast and see if it clears up.

I was thinking it might be chlorinated pool water from the start of swim season, but then I noticed that your in NZ so it's actually the end of swim season. However, if there has been some kind of new environmental factor introduced that might explain it.

Since you're in NZ, taking him to a Dr shouldn't be as risky as it is her in the US, though I understand your other reason for avoiding them. It is possible to have a urinalysis done to rule out UTI without actually visiting the Dr him/herself. They just need him to pee in a sterile sample cup.
