BF infant, intolerances, weight gain

I just want to get opinions of mommies of babies with intolerances on this one.

DD2 has been showing reactions since 10 days old (soy) and then to almost everything after 6 weeks (hospitalization and antibiotics -- no comments there please).

After that it was lots of green stools, mucus, blood, and no odor. About two weeks after an exposure things would return to "normal" (better color, less mucus, no blood, odor) and this cycled through the last five months. FIVE MONTHS.

Dr was aware and agreed that her slow weight gain was due to malabsorption from the inflammation due to reactions. All of a sudden she's concerned about FTT b/c DD's percentiles have dropped.

Height and head circumference are spot on at 50th (where they've been) but weight has dropped to 25th or so from the 50th. She wanted a weight check in two weeks which I scheduled and then cancelled.

What should I do now? Wait until her 9 month appointment in August? Schedule the weight check? I'm seeing a naturopath who specializes in food/gut issues as well as a holistic lactation consultant who also specializes in those things. We haven't started solids yet, either.

Suggestions?

Well, 25% on the growth charts is hardly FTT. So while I think you're right to investigate this, I wouldn't let anyone panic you into anything. Breastfed babies often drop on the growth chart (growth charts were based on how formula fed babies gain weight). I don't think you're seeing anything particularly worrisome in terms of weight yet.

I would definitely be working on some gut healing. Did you do probiotics after the antibiotics? That would be one place to start, with a good infant probiotic (pharmax & klaire labs make two good ones).

Yes, we're doing probiotics and a host of healing things for me. I did two rounds of Accutane in my early twenties..

It seemed silly to bring her in two weeks later for a check. We knew she wouldn't have gained!

Yeah, that kind of micromanagement of weight gain I think is crazy making to begin with, but I don't think you're nearly in a place to start doing that.

I was thinking probiotics directly for your babe - was it your babe that was on antibiotics?

Yes, it was the baby. She's on probiotics and I am too.

Have you done a stool test? You could then do targeted probiotics (if you know which ones are low), and enzymes to help absorption. My DS has been gaining weight ever since we did that, since it told us more of the story. Just out of curiosity, what doctor are you seeing (since you're in CT like me)?
