12 months later and . . .

I know my fellow parents on this board will appreciate this. DH and I finally had our first date in 12 months.

We tried in the earlier months before DS's needs became even greater, but we only had one successful date in early June 2009 before DS's needs worsened. DS has finally reached a point where we could leave him so we had our first date in a year.

It was wonderful!!!

Great for you!

Congratulations!!! I do indeed understand We have no family near us, so we've had to find friends who are comfortable with Connor's needs, and sometimes that isn't easy. It's fine now, he's medically stable and behaviorally easy, it's just the language barrier (he signs).

So, what did you do on your date night??

Thanks! We went to an afternoon matinee movie. It was so nice to sit and cuddle/hold hands with DH without the frequent interruptions.

And, Odin did wonderfully with my parents. He's very close with them (sees them every day) so he allows them to comfort if needed. With less familiar people, he freaks out and is inconsolable. It's so nice having him stable enough medically and emotionally for a date.

Congrats! It's so important to have the chance to reconnect with your spouse/partner and just enjoy each other's company.

There is a church in Centerville that offers a date night once a month for parents with special needs children (except for July and Dec). They have one-on-one aides for the kids with special needs and activites for their typically-developing siblings. You do not need to be a member of their church or any church to participate and they not try to convert the children. My DS loves going for his "night out" and DH and I get an evening together. I don't know if any of their volunteers sign, but you could ask them about it.

How did I not know about this???!! WOW! How fast do the reservations fill up? This is AWESOME!!! I'm up in Huber, but it would be easy to drive down there and do dinner down there instead of up here. I will definitely be calling them to ask about it Gosh, we even went to that church a few times when we lived in Beavercreek, and I still didn't know about this program!

Reservations fill up FAST! Mark the registration day on your calendar and get your kids signed up that morning. It is an awesome program - and a very popular one.
