DS- Dust mite Allergy Diagnosis in a 4 year old

DS has recently become very stuffy, itchy eyes, and body and irritable.
He has had a history of drooling (breathing through his mouth) and since November has been sick a lot!!! Two bouts of pneumonia and lots of upper respiratory. He has been seeing a homeopath and a chiropractor and tried Clairitin for awhile- nothing has really helped.
I decided to take him to an allergist and have him skin tested. He reacted to the dust mites. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
What a crappy allergy to have! This has really taken a toll on me emotionally as it makes me feel uncomfortable in our home and so sad to hear my DS try to breathe.
I went ahead and ordered a new latex bed and bed materials from Organic Grace (another MDC momma ) and that should arrive soon. We live in a very humid place with LOTS of pollen, so I have closed the windows and started running the AC. I am planning on getting rid of some of our older upholstered furniture and keep the house as clean as possible. However, we live in a rental and have carpet EVERYWHERE except the kitchen and bathroom. I hated it before and now I really hate it!!! I am talking to my landlord about hopefully replacing it- maybe with cork if I can afford it.
Also, do any of your children take an allergy medicine for it?
MOMMAS! I am so bummed about it, just wanted to get some advice, support, and connect with some of you.
TIA

When my DD1 was diagnosed with dust allergy, she was on daily Zyrtec for about a year (maybe more). She had a persistent cough and itchy eyes, and sneezed. Our upstairs (the bedrooms) is carpeted. I encased her mattresses and pillows, and switched her homemade quilt for a hot-water washable comforter. All the stuffed animals were put in the closet, and the door was kept closed. We have a good vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter, and I vacuumed when she wasn't around. I also switched the heavy (dusty) drapes for roman shades that I can just wipe down. She started taking the zyrtec only when she needed it and I don't think she's used it in over a year now.

Thanks so much for responding and sharing.
He has had strep this week and was soooooo worn down!
He will be starting on Zyrtec (i hate this!).
What were your little one's symptoms like? His is mainly nasal- total congestion, his nose NEVER runs. Also, does your daughter have asthma?
Thanks!
