No weight gain in 6 months?

Ds is 18 months old and hasn't really gained any weight in the last six months or so. He weighed 21 pounds at 9 months, then about 24 pounds at about 11 months and has stayed at about the same weight since. He has grown about 3 inches in height, but he just looks so skinny now.

I am a bit concerned because it seems like his weight gain slowed/ stopped when he started eating solids. 11 months is about when he started eating solids, he was almost 100% breastfed prior to that. He eats a ton now, sometimes just as much as myself or my husband and we're big eaters. We are still nursing, but due to pregnancy i have almost no milk left. We started him on cows milk, but he didn't do well and so now we are using almond and goats milk.

Should I be concerned about his lack of weight gain? Food sensitivities?

My daughter weighed 23 pounds FOREVER! I don't remember exactly, but I'd say it was for at least 7 or 8 months. Looking back at the pictures, I can see that she's just lost her chunk as she's gotten taller but not gained a lot. I haven't had any concerns!

Normal. Both of mine did that. They were 25lbs by 9 or 10 months and stayed there forever. Dd was 25lbs until about 22 months, ds moved on around 18-20 months but SLOWLY (at 24 months now he's 27lbs)

My daughter stopped gaining weight and very slowly grew in height from 6 months to 17 months. She gained 1.5lbs and grew 2 inches in 11 months. Our Drs biggest concern was she went from the 85% to not being on the charts. She nursed and ate everything in sight. He did have us go the growth clinic and they said there is really nothing wrong. She was just in a slump.
The things to watch for is slow motor skills development, lack of eye contact, and watch for things like heavy peeing and the runs.
One thing that impact weight gain/growth is low iron. So getting the iron tested and introducig and iron supplement or high iron foods.
We eat high iron foods and cook in cast iron and my kids all have low iron. some kids just need a little boost.

We are back on the growth chart and she is looking bigger and growing out of some clothes!!! Yeah!!!

My daughter was 19.4 lbs at 5 months and 19.8 lbs at 15 months. *shrug* Now at 2 years old she is super healthy and thriving and ahead on every milestone. No biggie.

DS gained and gained like crazy till he was about 18 mons. I kept waiting for him to slow down (esp because he had already grown out of 2 car seats and on his way out of a 3rd)

So at 13 mons he was about 30 lbs then at 18 mons he was about 33 lbs (so slower weight gain then previous) at 2 years he was still 33 lbs. Now at 2 years 4 mons he is 35.6 lbs (I just weighed him )

In terms of height he was 31.5" at 12 mons at 25 mons he was just under 35" and he is just under 37"

I think as long as a toddler is eating, is active and developing within the range of normal and void and BM's with in the range of normal I would have no concerns.

Thanks everyone for the reasurrance. He is a very active and bright little so everything is probably ok.

I never worried when he was just breastfed. But now that he is mostly on solids and hardly getting any breast milk I always wonder if I'm doing it right.

Toddlers are supposed to slow down in their weight gain. Infants more than double their weight in the first year. If toddlers did that, you'd have a 45 lb. 2 year old!

I agree it's probably normal - my daughter was 23 pounds from 9 to 18 months - but definitely get him checked out if you feel he's not developing as he should or something is up.

We do nurse a lot still, and i have no plans of weaning anytime soon, but my supply is basically gone and most of the time it just feels like dry nursing. I can only get a couple drops out if i really try. I'm sad my little guy isnt getting milk

Are you pregnant? If not, you should be able to increase your supply. How often does he nurse? Have you tried any supplements to increase supply?

Awesome. I have been wondering the same exact thing about my 18 mo. old! He also weighs 24 pounds and has weighed 24 pounds for...well, for as long as I can remember! I think he weighed 24 pounds at around 13 months, if I do recall. And still weighs 24. I always worry about it, because DS is a picky eater and still nurses more than he eats! Thanks for all the responses -- makes me feel much better.

My 20 month old has actually lost a pound since he was 7 months old (was 30 lbs) he's so much more active now and taller. I think it's normal.

Another totally normal vote! All three of mine packed on baby weight, and then stayed the same weight for a long time while shooting up. My 28 month old is doing it now.

Yep, I am pregnant. Crossing my fingers that he'll stay interested in nursing till my milk comes back.

Hang in there! Most toddlers seem willing to take it back up when the baby arrives.
