Cloth Diapering Moms...HELP!

Ok, so I have FINALLY (after 4 years of trying) convinced my DH that we need to at least give cloth a try. Basically I realized that if we could buy 5 Flip covers and I could make 20 inserts, it would be the same cost as 2 months of diapers. And assuming it works, we'll add some more covers and I'll make some wee fitteds for the baby.

Ok, so now I need help deciding what to make the inserts out of. I know a lot of people don't love the micro terry b/c it can hold smells after a long time, but since I'm making them for about $1.50 per, I'm not too worried about that. What I really really want is to be basically leak free so DH thinks it's a great system.

So I'm planning on 4 layers of micro terry. Since these are just inserts, not pocket diapers, I need to put something over the terry. What should I do on top? I was thinking maybe cotton velour. Or should I go for micro fleece?

Is 4 layers of the micro excessive? Our DS will be 2 when we implement it.

THANKS in advance for the help. I really am flying blind here!

Also, if someone can think of another combo of fabrics I should try, I am totally open to it! I really just want something super absorbent!

Is micro-fleece absorbant?? I've always thought it was used as a top layer to draw wetness away from baby and a more absorbant material - like flannel or cotton terry - was used in the middle.

You might want to peruse some of the diaper retailers and read the descriptions of their stuffer and doublets. They usually tell you what they are made of.

And quite frankly for about the same price per, you can buy prefolds. If you buy infant prefolds, you can make wee fitteds out of them fairly easily. IMO, covered fitteds will do a much better job of holding in the newborn poop than a soaker and cover.

You should also check the diaper making forum on here. I'm sure there will be tons of info on there.

Hubby doesn't do much diapering so he doesn't get a diaper vote. If he wants sposies he will buy them himself. In my case I got him osocozy (5) dipes for him to use as it is the material I want and the velcro he wants. The rest of the dipes I pick and choose or make myself. That being said...

Nothing absorbs or feels so good as a prefold (I'm partial to GMD)

Of note--my husband gets blowouts from our girl all the time in sposies when he uses them butt I and my sitter have NEVER had one since we switched to cloth. Get your hubby the crappiest sposies you can and that will convince him more than any money. Gross out factor is priceless.

DDDC -

I'm sur eyou know you can't have microterry (microfiber) next to the skin.
It's so absorbant it will steal the moisture from my babe's bum. If you have sewn with it, you'll notice your cracked and dry your fingers will get from touching it. I only use my microfiber inserts inside of my pocket diapers (but I prefer more natural fibers, they tend to stink less).
Upi can cover with suedecloth (like the cotton babies flip inserts) or fleece or flannel, etc....

I've CD'd 2 babies and am expecting another. We use flip covers sometimes, and the best bet for these is a trifolded prefold. They are cheap, easy as heck to clean, and work great.

diaperswappers is great for buying and selling used diapers...you can buy infant prefolds then sell and upgrade to regulars.

Good luck!

If you're looking to make something, use flannel, cotton birdseye, cotton velour or cotton sherpa.

I have retro-fitted cotton prefolds to use as diapers, they work pretty well.

So it sounds like I could just by 25 or 30 of the GMD prefolds for now? That would be awesome if I didn't have to sew anything!

When the baby comes, I could do prefolds with a snappi to help prevent blowouts....and see how I feel about the covers then. I'll probably get a few smaller covers (or maybe make those).

Thanks for all the input---and I LOVE the idea of buying crappy sposies! Hysterical!

I would just do the prefolds. You can jazz them up with some minkee or cotton velour if you want, but prefolds work great.

If your willing to do some folding look into flats they will pretty much work form birth through potty can be used in a flip and depedning of fabric will run around $1 a diaper.
