Putting 8 month old to bed / in and out of bed with a big baby

Okay, I want to work on this bedtime/sleeping thing.

I rocked, bounced, Ergo-ed my dd to sleep until she was over 18 months. I don't really want to do that again with ds.

I got an exercise ball, which has made the constant bouncing a lot easier, but it's still rough and some days I spend hours and hours on the ball. Ds is 8 months old, not yet crawling or sitting unassisted, and teething. He has been sick the last couple weeks, so maybe it has been harder because of that, but I will get him to sleep and then he will wake up when I lay him down. I do this 0-5 times at bedtime, and might do the same several times if he wakes up in the night.

This is how I spent my time from 3:30-6:30 this morning. He would fall asleep bouncing or rocking, go totally limp, I'd head for bed and lie down with him, and he'd start crying immediately...repeat.

To compound things, we have a crib side-carred, but it is hard for me to get over to the crib and lay him down without waking him. Also, all the up and down with a 20 pound baby is hard on my body.

So, my questions:

My baby often won't nurse to sleep, and he sleeps on his back, so I can't put him down and pat his back. Do you have any suggestions for whether or how to transition to a different method than rocking/bouncing/ergo? Or should I just tough it out until he is a little older before I teach him to lie down and go to sleep?

If you have ever side-carred a crib, how the heck did you get the baby in and out of the crib without ruining your back, shoulders, arms, wrists, etc?

TIA

I didn't use a side carred crib & I never figured out how to get ds into the regular crib without jolting him down (it was such a deep drop). I eventually gave up on the crib.

I think I would nurse him to sleep as often as possible - hopefully being able to transition to just nursing to sleep over time. At least with the nursing to sleep I find I can slowly move away from ds without disturbing him.
