First PP period at 7 months

Sigh. I just got my first PP period, and I don't understand why.

My baby is 7 months old. He's basically still EBF (we just started letting him reach for things like broccoli florets, but he's genuinely not ingesting anything, just licking it and waving it around.)

Correct me if I have this wrong, but: ovulation is suppressed by prolactin, and prolactin levels go up when you're near your baby and nursing, yes? I don't understand how my prolactin levels could have gone down enough to allow ovulation:

My guy eats frequently, on cue. I have never attempted any scheduling, and I offer the boob at the drop of a hat. He sleeps with us, and wakes once or twice to nurse between midnight and morning. He's never gone more than five hours between nursings. He doesn't take a pacifier. I am almost never separated from him, and if I am it's for really short periods. Blah blah blah- we never called it ecological breastfeeding, but I think it's pretty close. (I don't nap with him, but he naps almost exclusively in my arms. That's the only one I can think of.)

Anyway, I am kind of baffled as to why my period came back - and feeling totally grumpy and inadequate. Did I do something wrong? Is this simply genetic? I asked my mom, and her period came back at around six months after having her babies, both times.

Any wisdom?

- your not doing anything wrong! Some women EBF around the clock, babywear etc. etc. and STILL get their period back right away!

I think it just depends.........

Plus, it is normal for ecological breastfeeding women to get their periods back at 9-14 months anyway.

Good luck! Feel free to join us on the Charting to Avoid thread

Every woman is so different, and you are not doing one thing wrong.

Are you super young? If so, I'd just blame it on being "young & fertile".

At least, that's what I blame my early return of AF on. This is how my history has gone:

Baby #1 was half bottle & half breastfed. I had her at just 17 yrs old. AF came back like clockwork only 9 weeks PP.

Baby #2 was entirely breastfed, exactly like yours is. Co-slept, babywore, etc., etc. I was 24, AF came back perfectly regularly again at 9 weeks PP!

Then, babies #3 and #4 were both born in my early 30s. Entirely EBF & co-slept, etc. blah blah (exactly the same as with baby #2). My AF didn't come back until 7.5 mos and 9 mos PP, respectively, after them. It was so funny, I thought 9 mos PP was soooo late, yet some of my friends laughed at me because theirs didn't come back for years PP! lol

Baby #5 is just under 8 mos old & I've not had any PPAF yet. I'm 36 & I can't help but wonder if I'm going to see it soon or not..... & if I don't see it soon, I'm going to blame it on my age.

I got my period back two months postpartum, despite tandem nursing a toddler and a newborn. Cosleeping, ecological breastfeeding, babywearing, no bottles ever. Some of us are just "lucky!"

Hardly! I'm 33! Not that that's heading for the retirement home, but really...

Thanks, everyone. It's good to know that I'm not totally freakish.

Yeah, I got PPAF at 3mpp, and trust me, she was nursed constantly and we coslept, baby wore, EBF, the whole 9 yards. Fwiw, my LP wasn't long enough to sustain a pregnancy until after 12mpp though, so you may be fine still for preventing purposes.

What others said-- you're not doing anything wrong!

My period came back at exactly 5 months pp despite round the clock on demand breastfeeding, co-sleeping (and night nursing!), not using a pacifier, constant babywearing, etc.

I do suspect there's a genetic factor to it. My father's mother breastfed her babies exclusively, and she still managed to get pregnant at 3 months pp TWICE.

Some of us just have all the luck.
