GD/urine

According to my Dr., glucose levels rise during pregnancy so the amount of glucose in my urine is no indication that I could be at risk for GD. She said this when I tried to compromise on only taking the GD challenge test if the glucose in my urine spikes. So...then why bother for checking my urine for glucose at all? I'm confused. Can anyone help me out with this one please?

I do decline the GD test but I also have had glucose in my urine with my pregnancies, particularly at the end or when ill...from what I understand this has more to do with pregnant kidneys than GD and that would not be a reliable indicator to go by. I would imagine that is why your Dr said what he said...that just means if you really don't want or feel the GD blood test is necessary, you might have to be prepared with another reason or ready to decline without one.

Maybe this will help:

I do have GD and have had it for four pregnancies and have never spilled glucose in my urine. Diabetes mellitus does mean sweet urine... and that's the way it used to be diagnosed. If it were me, and if this had occured more then once, then I would probably do the 1 hour GTT and see what happens. If you do have GD, better to know about it as there are some very real risks for people who do have uncontrolled GD and pregnancy.

I would take the test too. I've never had GD but this pregnancy I barely passed and my MW and OB said it was no problem but to watch my sugar anyway. I have no symptoms or anything that would even tip me or a doc off to the possibility of high sugar. I'm a good weight, no real swelling, eat well etc but just knowing that I was that close to being considered GD is enough for me to consider this test not one to skip.

I apparently had tons of sugar in my urine because my doctor had me take the GD test a 2nd time even though the first with my first doctor was fine (we switched countries halfway through, so 2 different doctors in pregnancy). The second test was also fine.

I guess I just have sugary pee in pregnancy.

I see. Thanks so much for clarifying the GD/urine thing. So, why is the urine checked for glucose at all then? I've never had glucose in my urine, this pg or the last, just curious.

Because at certain levels it could indicate a problem...just as protein at certain levels could indicate a problem. It's worth keeping up with so that anything can be dealt with sooner rather than later.
