Mommy milk and formula or mommy milk and cow milk?

DS is almost a year old, and we've had some BF issues, so every once in a while DS gets a bottle of formula, 4-8 oz, or less. We only give formula when he is tired and needs to sleep or is hungry AND is hurting me when he nurses(i.e. biting, not latching right, bitingandpinching, and i just cannot stand it anymore.) so its not very often, but anyways.

So, what i'm wondering is, for those times, the mommy just cannot stand it anymore, here's daddy times, is cow milk ok to give, or should we be giving him formula?

I think formula, but I'm sure others will have better reasoned arguments as to "why."

eta: Okay, here's some why (and since your baby is almost a year, it seems like they're saying that it's more of a "doesn't matter if it's only occasional supplementation"): http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mi...pplements.html

I am going to move this out to Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy.

We also had to supplement due to supply issues. 5-7 oz/day while she was EBF, then just here and there after she started solids.

We did formula until a year and have just switched to cow's milk. I'm much happier with the cow's milk myself - it's local organic grass-fed unhomogenized lightly pasteurized bla bla bla, and it tastes delicious, unlike formula :Puke

I feel like yummy fresh animal milk is way better than gross powdered processed animal milk, kwim?

Formula is better until 18-24 months. Animal milks around/after age two.

If it's not very often, I'd do the cow milk, personally.

I wouldn't have this dilemma if only we had raw milk! But we can neither afford a milk share program, nor can we find raw milk in smaller quantities around here(I think its illegal to sell in my state)

I do think formula is gross, disgusting, fake stuff that is useful if baby isn't getting enough mommy milk to survive, but not a 1:1 replacement for BM, BUT there are honestly times where I just. can. not. nurse. him. right. now. OW!. We have leftover formula from WIC, as well as mailed samples, so cost isn't an issue with the formula.

I'm starting to think I might just put away the bottles though(If I could only find that one that is missing, probably with chunky formula in it by now) and his milk choice will be "either fall asleep without biting mommy, or fall asleep tossing around the bed with mommy and daddy trying to soothe you until you finally give up and fall asleep"

watch out for allergies!

I would just do cows milk. Or no supplement at all if she eats a lot.
