My 14yo cat is becoming pretty badly crippled with arthritis. She is also a heartworm survivor, so she isn't a healthy animal, anyway. She'll be on Prednisone for the rest of her life to combat the inflammation caused by the worms (the worms are gone, but the inflammation is permanent).
I took her to the vet yesterday to see if there is anything we can do to make her life more comfortable. We're trying her on an injectable medication to see if it will help, but it will be a month or so before any difference would be noticed.
I feel really badly about this. We just put our dog down last year for dementia....he wasn't physically "sick" and it was hard to watch him decline and harder to put down a seemingly healthy animal. Kitty isn't physically healthy, but she still gets tiny bits of enjoyment out of life. She purrs, cuddles, and loooooves being brushed. It's hard to know when to draw the line; I mean, she can't tell me how crappy she feels. Ugh.
