Not that you need another "irresponsible" mother to chime in, but my DD (now 12 almost 13) rode her bike or the city bus to school since she was a 4th grader, she now goes to middle school much farther away, and will sometimes ride two city buses home or to climbing. My DS (10) is changing schools this fall; he will be going to the neighborhood school about a mile (maybe a little less) away and will be riding his bike. He is so looking forward to doing this, he really enjoys a little independence. My eldest, now an adult, rode her bike to her elementary school, about the same distance as DS's, at 9. From middle school through high school she always walked, rode her bike or took the city bus to school. We live in what I would describe as a medium-sized University town.
