Diaper rash--may have to give up cloth?

Sorry if this question has been posted already!

I have been using bumgenius diapers since my daughter was two weeks old, and have switched back and forth from time to time with disposables because of stubborn diaper rash. It seems that pretty much since she was born she's been red and rashy and the only thing that seems to help is balmex, which I only apply when she's got disposables on. With cloth, I have tried organic, extra virgin coconut oil (for three days, maybe I didn't give it enough time but three days is a long time in diaper rash land), a few organic, CD-safe butt balms, and cornstarch, which caused (or flared up??) a nasty yeasty rash. So I went back to balmex and she's been rash-free for several days--but wearing disposables.

I really don't want to give up on cloth, but it seems annoying to have to use a fleece insert every time I put balmex on her....those diapers are bulky enough right now! plus I spent a lot of money on them (got 24 of them used, but still...) and hate to think of them going to waste. The weird thing is that when she pees she is usually dry when I take the cd off her (i mean the diaper is so absorbent her skin is dry to the touch) and yet she develops this awful rash.

Any ideas or suggestions? I don't want to give up!

Do you think she could be allergic to the polyester that the liner of the bg is made of? Fleece is poly as well, but if you always use a barrier cream it is kinda protected. I would buy a dozen infant pf and try those. You can use your bg as covers so you don't have to invest in covers till you know if it helps.

you can get a dozen here for only $13.00. Those are the seconds but they are not even noticably seconds.

Hope this helps.

I second the pf, that's ALL we ever used with organic cotton covers. For the rash what worked for us was calendula ointment (not the cream or oil) and potato starch (on a totally dried bottom). And lots of naked butt time .

I couldn't use the BG's because of the suedecloth inner. My son got a horrible rash anytime I used any dipe with suedecloth. We could use the fleece inners though....I WISH the BG came with a fleece inner because I did like the fit and ease of them.

It could just be that your baby's skin isn't doing well with that particular dipe and you might need to try to sell your stash and try something new.

i just got on to this thread to ask the SAME EXACT QUESTION! my friend also had a problem with BG's - hers she thinks was related to the soft water and the salt bothering baby's tush. my lo gets a rash after the 2nd/3rd CD she wears - it doesn't happen immediately.

i just ordered some GroBaby CD yesterday - i don't remember what they were made of, but i hope they work. although, i definitely don't want to buy new ones. i will try pp's suggestion to use pf. hope you find something that works too!

good luck!

I think I have a bunch of organic one size pfs that came with the box of econobums that someone gave me for my shower. I haven't tried them yet but I think those inserts are what you guys are talking about??? I can use them with the BG covers?

Now that dd's diaper rash is totally clear now (after a week of sposies and balmex) we went back to BGs last night. We'll see what happens. I am just concerned that her skin will be in contact with so much wetness with the pfs if I switch over to them. With the BGs, the wetness is just wicked away.

I'll report back.

My DD has always had sensitive skin. I used BG from birth and she always had some severity of a rash. I tried tons of different detergents, different diapers, and finally I quit drinking the 1 can of pop a day I was drinking (for totally unrelated reasons). Low and behold the rash went away.

I didn't want to never drink a soda so I have played with the diapers we have and figured out a way to keep her rash free. I do pf during the day usually without a cover and lots of naked time. During nap and bed we use the BG stuffed with a toddler pf. She hadn't had a rash since we started this.

Moral of my story is it could even be something you are eating/drinking and the sposie pulls it away enough she can heal up. Good luck mama!

Whoa, soda? Hmmm DD has a horrible rash (as for a few weeks) and well, I don't normally drink soda but her bday was June 1st and we had a BBQ and LOTS of leftover soda in the frig. I've had a few a day so I wonder if the caffiene in it is bothering her?

I also had switched her diapers to Tide, so last night I used All (I don't have any great detergent yet, just started CDing about 3 weeks ago)

Katie--That is verrry interesting. I don't drink soda often, but I guess a million other things I eat and drink could be the culprit. In any case, I'm trying the econobum right now to see how the pf works for a few days. I like your idea of pfs during the day and naked time! How often do you change them though, since they get wet so fast? I am used to BG's wicking the moisture away from her skin.

mangomommy--try charlie's soap for detergent, because tide and all could definitely be problematic. I was only going to use charlie's for the cloth dipes, but it is pretty cheap and I like how it cleans the rest of my laundry so I use it exclusively. You can buy it online through the charlie's soap website. FYI the way I get mine clean and odor-free is to do the cold water rinse followed by 2 wash/rinse cycles on the hot/cold setting. I figured out if I only do a single wash/rinse cycle, the dipes still stink. Good luck with your CDing!

I took her in, it's a yeast infection. I'm thinking of ordering some Charlie's from Amazon.com. I do the swagbucks thing and have like $40 so far that I can use. I'm on a tight budget LOL.

Glad you figured it out! I do love my Charlies! As I have said in pp's until it had time to get all my build up out I didn't Love it like I do no. So my advise is give it time. It took me about a bag and a 1/2 before I was like wow I can never go back. lol

Hope you love it as well! And that you little ones bum feels better soon!

I change every pee when she has no cover on. For 2 reasons, one it doesn't get me and my house wet and 2 because I don't want the pee sitting on her skin. I went from pf to pockets and back to pf. We do more naked time than my carpet, and furniture and sanity can take at the moment but she HATE getting her diaper changed and is working on potty learning so I will get to do a good shampoo job when this is all done. lol

Hope you are getting it all figured out!
