Military hossy's and declining interventions. - Page 2

You have to TELL them NOT ask them to do things.

I was 7 months pregnant with UNdiagnosed Celiac disease, went in because I was sick (like 7 times in a month) and the Dr's and nurses and NMW were all VERY rude to me and even down right mean at times. Telling me all my major organs looked fine, my blood was fine and they couldn't understand why I was acting like that and crying so much and throwing up everywhere. I had to eventually get my composure and tell this Head of Obstetrics jerk to sit down, shut up, and listen to me. He was floored that I was talking to him like that, but it got his attention and he took care of me briefly (over night this time).

I went in again at 38 weeks with ctx, hooked up to monitor, having decels in fetal heart rate and told she was sleeping, monitor clearly showed she was moving like a crazy person though (I could feel it too, super kicks really) and sent home for lack of progress. I asked them several times if her heart should be going down like that so many times (not just once or twice in the 10 minutes I was on) told all was normal and come back if I was really in pain. My daughter passed away the next day. She was in distress from the cord being wrapped too tight and I pointed out that there was a problem, they didn't care at all and we lost our baby. I went in and asked for my records, and monitoring strip, the stupid lady tried to tell me they didn't have to give me my records at a MTF. I FREAKED out, and demanded she hand them over, and told her my attorney would be in contact. I did get my records with help from the attorney, but there was time missing from the strip as well as one of the hospital visits from being so sick, the attorney eventually said he couldn't help me.

Just tell them, demand even that they not take the baby from you and if they do the things you don't want them too (put it all in writing, ie BP) tell them you'll sue the crap out of them, do NOT let them bully you. Just my 2 cents worth.

Oh and my 1st daughter was born there too, they treated me like sh!t then too, my blood pressure was 175/115 BEFORE they even acknowledged there was a problem. They tried to put an internal fetal monitor inside me BEFORE they would give me an epidural, UM hello, we should NEVER dig around inside a person with NO pain meds stupid nurse!!! Couldn't believe I was in so much pain because I was only dilated to a 3, again hello stupid people, refused to give me an epidural (I was only 19 and very uninformed) because I hadn't made it to 4cm, after 45 hours of hard labor convinced them to give me the epi and baby delivered 20 minutes later (3-10cm in 20 mins!!) I hate them and the hospital I delivered at and would never ever do it again!!!

My sister was given the option of leaving the army almost as soon as she announced she was preg. She chose not to leave the army. She is in the army band and has the option of going to a non-deployable unit which both her and her husband will be doing. Meanwhile though she did have to set up a very detailed care plan for the baby. She was even told that if she didn't get it done by a certain date they would discharge her against her will.

Good advice for any hospital I think.

Ugh this same thing happened to me at a civilian hospital. I wasn't pregnant but I was in the hospital for a week once for a MAJOR kidney infection. They would keep me for a day or two and then send me home then a few hours later I would be back. I was throwing up (twice on a nurse) they way my kidney swelled it wasn't allowing any of the infection out so it wasn't showing up in any of their tests. Finally once they started realizing there were real problems going on the one ER doc admitted that I was "a really sick women" and that 'they thought I was just a drug addict looking for pain pills that's why we kept sending you home". Even though I repeated told them I DON'T want pain meds When they finally did surgery the surgeon said it was the worst infection he has ever seen without someone dying. Gee thanks.

My goodness Mama I am so so sorry they treated you and your baby like that. How terrible.

I also had a similar experience. My dd was born with no complications, mostly delivered by myself since the doc and nurses ignored me when I said it was time to start pushing. Immediately after dd was born doc tells me that he "needs to check for uterine tears". I saw no blood (neither did DH) and was in no pain but I was terrified that there was a tear in there. Unfortunately I trusted him. What he really did was a manual removal of the placenta. He stuck his hand all the way up inside of me. He arm was inside of me up to just before his elbow. I was drug free and SCREAMING in pain. He did a completely unnecessary procedure on me because he wanted to get out of the delivery room 5 min's faster. The nurses were in on it too because they denied it ever happening on my medical records. I got PTSD from the experience, had trouble bonding with dd, and it still turns my stomach to think about it....but anyways yeah. I totally agree with you on the "should NEVER dig around inside a person with NO pain meds" thing.

Just wanted to respond re: military child dependents. Of course they cant "do" anything to them, force them to be vaccinated or do anything else. For goodness sakes....

Tenk, (and anyone else out there with birth trauma) you may want to look into a therapist that does EMDR therapy. It's much faster then regular 'talk' therapy and often more effective. The place where EMDR works best is single events that led to trauma, so for something like birth trauma, which is a one time occurrence it works great for. I went to an EMDR therapist with consistent nightmares, trouble falling asleep (for months I was only getting 3-4 hrs of sleep/night), and trouble bonding with my baby because on some sub-conscious level I associated her with my rape. After ONE session all of that stuff went away.

I can't say that the whole experience has completely gone away though. It's still changed me as a person but I can deal with it now. I think that is why I'm so adamant about helping my sister not get taken advantage of now. I really hope I get to be there. I'd like to see anyone in that hospital try to pull something.

Is she open to an "oopsie homebirth"? They can't prove she did it on purpose...

I'm a dependent so I really don't know what her rights are, but can she be assigned to a birth center? If it's within Tricare, it should be fine.

Tricare doesn't cover birth centers...I don't think. The ones I've dealt with don't even ATTEMPT to file with them because IF they pay it's so little that it's ridiculous.

So not fair. The two centers I've talked to in TX don't accept it

Same thing happen to our second son....they then tried to get us to sign papers to back date that they did the procedure becuase of course we would have wanted it done.

I guess my question is... is it illegal to birth else where? Even if not covered fully by insurance? Or if in militry you must go to xyz hospital?
to the PP: It depends. civilians can go anywhere, but Tricare doesn't cover all places. They will cover any hospital for labor and delivery as you might go into labor in a different city, etc, it is considered an emergency. They won't pay if you happen to walk into a birthing center.
If you are however active duty, you have to go where they send you to. You signed your rights away to the military. They will vaccinate you and give you whatever treatment they feel is right for you. Of course you have some saying, but e.g. with birthing, they won't allow home birth. Or they won't allow you to skip a shot. You will get them all, period. So if you are active duty and want a homebirth, you will have to arrange with a midwife or go unassisted, pay out of pocket and do not tell anyone. And then tell the hospital it was an ooppps.
