The Corrections?

Anyone read this? I just finished it and it has pretty much made me want to off myself. I found it really, reallly depressing--and too close to home as the mom is so similar to my mother...

On the bright side, it gave me some more compassion toward my mother, but on the hand--urgh, it was just painful to read.

Would love to know others thoughts on the book.

It is SO depressing! It's very well-written, but I too saw a lot of my MIL in the book, as well as my FIL. I encouraged my husband to read it and he wasn't very happy with me, LOL.

It's been a few years since I've read it, so I don't remember many details, but it did leave an impression on me and I doubt I will ever read it again!

Do you think, if Enid wasn't so much like my mom (or your MIL) that it would be an easier read? I really found it depressing, it's still bumming me out! And that's ok--it's good to read books that make you feel things...but I wish I could see more humor in the book.

I think it would still be depressing, but the similarities just compounded it and brought it too close to home.

I thought that it was REALLY good. I didn't have anyone that was that represented from my life, so maybe that made it easier, but what I loved about the book was how flawed and real each character seemed to me. Just when you thought that this or that character was the "good" guy they'd real up and you'd see all of the ugly reality. I thought that the writing was great too. Sorry that it hit a little too close to home.
