Documentation for Ohio

We're starting to homeschool and will be going half time this summer (with a couple of weeks off). Can you tell me what I need to document? # of hours in each subject? Curriculum lessons or books read on each day? Something else?

I'm planning to join our local homeschool support network, but if I join before August, I'll have to pay for another year in August since that's the beginning of their year. So I'd like to wait and just pay my dues in August, but I'm needing some direction before then so I don't screw this up.

You don't need to document anything for Ohio. For the first year you just notify of intent to homeschool. For every year after that you submit standardized test results or have a certified teacher sign a portfolio of sample work you put together. We use Seton Testing Service ever year. Its only $25 per student and you administer the test at home yourself, but you don't need this for the first year. If you look at my blog I have info about homeschooling in Ohio, including a sample notification letter. I haven't actually been blogging at all since we moved , but the info is there and it may be helpful to you starting out in this. Just click on my username and in my profile under contact info is the blog link.

www.cheohome.org will get you started for notification and such. Really there isn't *too* much that you need to do, just file notification assuring that you'll teach 900 hours total (don't really have to log hours though, just provide evidence that you are giving an education comparable to that many hours of ps) and then when you file for the next school year you submit your reporting (standardized testing or teacher assessment, unless your district's homeschool person approves another reporting method)

And are there no groups in your area that don't cost anything? Our local homeschool group is free, they request a donation to pay for childcare and cover some supplies for meetings but they don't make you do it (and their request is $5 a family). I know there are groups all over the state that have no dues, and there is a group over at yahoo groups called Ohio Homeschool that you can join free, if you ask at that group they can help you find a free support group if you want to find one.
