I don't know the name, others will be better at explaining this, but it is very possible that there is blood coming from where the placenta is connected, it can happen and cause no real problem.
The lumps can be just coagulated blood, not real lumps of anything. I'm sure her doc will do a few more scans and track her. Had she had ultrasounds before this? She could be loosing a vanishing twin she never new she had. This does not nessisarily put the other fetus in any danger.

When she went in to the hopsital did they not take a sample of the bloood?
I had a massively scary bleeding episode at about 24ish weeks. Middle of the night, having sex, didn't realize until I was covered in blood, soaked through the sheets (sorry to be so graphic), soaked a pad, bright red blood.
The first thing they did was check the baby's heartbeat--even if they don't have an us machine they should absolutely have a fetal heartrate moniter?!?
In my case, baby's heartbeat was strong and clear. Then they started with the tests and whatnot. Testing the blood helped them determine that it WAS NOT coming from inside my uterus, therefore, no placental abruption or other badness...
It ended up being unexplainable for me and I haven't had any problems since, but I would tell your friend to head into her nearest L&D ward and get some PROPER checks right now. I can't believe they even let her go home. I was kept in the hospital overnight, and not allowed to eat in case they had to do an emergency delivery (in the case of placental abruption).
Even if she's not far enough along for that to be feasible, she should be getting better monitering!!
Poor girl! That;s so scary! I really hope she gets some answers soon!
