How to combat rash at night?

We CD exclusively during the day. We tried sposies for a flight to visit relatives last week and had a huge poop blowout - which reminded me why we use CDs!!

But at night we have huge rash problems. DS has very rashy skin - it's not yeast - he just reacts strongly to any urine or poop left on him for very long. We go coverless a lot during the day and pockets for when we leave the house.

I don't have a problem with leaks at night - but he's sooo red in the morning and that sets him up for a rashy day. Whereas in a Huggies at night, he's not red in the morning at all - this drives me nuts - I do NOT want to use sposies. This issue happens regardless of whether he's in a fitted or a pocket diaper.

So I need to find a system that works, and I think that it means barrier creams. If I slather him in a zinc cream it seems to help - but then even with a flushable liner I'm running the risk of zinc on his diapers - and his cloths too - so I end up using a disposable baby wipe... argh...

Anyone been through this and found a system that doesn't include sposies or wrecked diapers/cloths?

This happens to us if our diapers have any lingering bacteria or residue in them. I would try adding 1 tablespoon bleach to your hot wash, and then rinsing several times, to see if this clears it up without creams.

If not, could you try a natural ointment that will be a barrier but won't hurt the dipes - I am thinking Homestead Company Baby Balm.

No diaper nights

That's how we do.

Get hospital chux pads mail order for the mattress or sew a something thick around the size of a mattress together (lots of prefolds?) with PUL backing. Do around three--enough to wash and have one.

We have this same problem. My guy just cant sit in a wet dipe that long. The solution is a stay dry liner. I tried making my own at first, but they just repelled and we had leak issues. So i bought a packof bummis liners which are about $5 for 5. If you're happy with your nighttime dipes otherwise, that would be the way i'd go. We used them for months. If you're looking for a diaper sution though, i'd highly recommend Happy Hempys pocket fitted w the stay dry liner. Thats what we're using now, and they dont have the stink issues many pockets do because they rinse cleaner due to no PUL.

I don't have a problem with serious rash, but my babe often has redness on her diaper area. I love California Baby's Calendula Cream. No Zinc Oxide. I slather it on at night after her bath and she's rash free in the morning. It's a little expensive so I only use it at night, but it seems to do the trick.

In my experience the micro suede (like on the bum genius) pull the moisture away the best and in the morning DD2 diaper is soaked but her butt is completely dry and no red at all. (She also has very rashy skin)

I don't know what kind of a pocket you are using but I might buy or borrow 1 bg and try it out.

Thanks all. I tried him in a BG last night slathered with a nappy rash cream with calendula - and he looked pretty good this morning - I'm going to keep trying this and see if it works long-term!

I've also long considered trying the Happy Hempy with fleece, and I think I may pick one up to try as well.

Stay dry at night

I'll have to try. My mattress cover worked alright but she is getting more mobile in her crib now so it won't work forever as she'll be putting her head in it--yech.

Oh, she's in a crib? LOL. I was wondering how that would work. We co-sleep full time, and DS is a sprayer. Diaper-free time at night unfortunately ain't gonna work here!

But 2 days of BG + calendula cream, and still no rash... perhaps we've found our system!
