The Raleigh News and Observer is doing a huge week-long front page series on SIDS this week. The articles so far have blasted "bedsharing". Reading the details about SIDS makes me really sad, especially those related to UNSAFE bedsharing, which make up a large percentage of the SIDS deaths apparently. But the first few articles lumped all bedsharing as bad and didn't mention that it can be done safely, much less that it is safer (in my opinion, based on my research) than crib sleeping. (The crib we bought has been recalled TWICE!) Today's article is specifically about bedsharing as related to SIDS, and James McKenna talks about safe cosleeping, which the news then basically goes on to the AAP to refute.
Sadly, it's pretty obvious that they're using this series to garner public support to begin prosecuting parents for bedsharing (which I don't know, maybe they should be able to if it's done horribly unsafely (ex - sleeping with parent on drugs). Here's a link to the articles in the series...
