Completely agree! That's exactly how we're using our Deposit a Gift registry....You list specific items and break them up into parts that people can contribute towards. They have a place to list your other registries too. That's one of the things I forgot to mention....They offer a free baby website, which I hadn't seen anywhere. It's kind of like a hub for all the baby details (like a wedding website was if you had one). It's really nice for keeping everyone in the loop, and then the registry info is just there if they want it.

sounds like a cool site, will have to check it out

Speaking of people liking to shop for gifts, one problem with online registries is all the people who will either not check *where* you're registered in time to order, or simply go to the local shops (or BRU) and assume you're registered there. I've been on *both* sides of this - and it kinda stinks! So, just be forewarned that it's most likely when having online registries.

I've also tried putting together a BRU registry, but the reality is that I want almost *nothing* from there that's actually available in stores.

Yep, target is the same way.. I walked around the store with a printout of my nephews registry for about an hour trying to find SOMETHING that was in the store that was listed on the registry.. it was such a waste of time.. that had registered all online, but the actual items in the store were just not there.

Thread Starter
after looking at different green babystores online, i've decided to go with depositagift.com... how cool is this website! i like that you can register for generic things such as crib, cloth diapers, etc. then friends/family deposit money which you can cash out to buy the actual things you want. we did something similar to this for our honeymoon.

i also decided to go with depositagift because with companies online, most of them only have a 30 day return policy and i didn't want to worry about whether or not the baby would be here before i'd be able to see if something worked for me.

awww relief.... green baby registry, check!

That site IS pretty cool but (maybe it's just me, or my part of the country, or something) I personally would not "buy" (contribute to) anything from it & would really wish you had a regular registry too. I like to shop for & bring physical gifts, I like to see the mom open it, I like to see everyone ooh & ahh over each of the guests' gifts. I'd probably end up getting baby clothes or something so I could bring a "real" gift & I know around here much of my friends/families would feel similarly. So, just thought I'd throw that out there, maybe register at a local store too or something just to have another alternative, or maybe I'm just weird.

I looked at deposit a gift & wishpot. I decided to go with wishpot mainly because I didn't like the idea of having generic items. I wanted people to actually see exactly what they were buying/contributing too, because I knew I would like to see the item if I were buying for someone else.
Both are cool ideas though.

The other thing I like most about wishpot is that you can create multiple lists and it's beyond easy to make sure that the item you're adding goes to the right now. I've got a "Baby Stuff" list, a "Possible Maternity Clothing" list (I'm trying to stay away from maternity clothes - I'm looking for items with volume and just buying bigger sizes in general), and a "Homebirth Supplies" list going.

So cool.

Of course, take into account that I'm using them as personal shopping lists not as traditional registries. We're financially stable so we don't need anyone to buy things for us and we prefer to do it ourselves anyway. Any gifts we get are going to be welcomed because of the love and care they represent.

Thankfully, we've got a lot of people we love and that love us back. We're incredibly lucky.

i'm new and am so happy i stumbled upon this thread first! thanks for the recommendations ladies. so many great ideas. i actually just signed-up with deposit a gift and i have to agree, this site is incredible. i think someone above said they were worried about only having generic items list, so i wanted to mention that you can also upload your own pics. we do have our eyes on some specific things and wanted our friends/family so see them, and so we are uploading images of those real items. but for services and stuff i am happy to use their images. they've got a ton, and they've pre-organized them into these easy lists, which has been helpful with preggo-brain b/c its hard to think of all the things we should register for. we are also going to do a small registry from a big box store for people who are not comfortable with this option, and what's nice is that there is space to list it on the depositagift.com site as well. i think our families are really going to love this little baby hub we're creating for them! and although people do like the traditional oohing and ahhing over gifts, i do hope that they'll be considerate of what we need/want, and our desire to be as green as we can be. we'll see how it goes, but overall, i think it's awesome!

It's definitely a great idea! Couldn't agree more! I have signed up with myregistry.com. Do you know any stores I can add items from? I have a few great gifts already on my baby registry but it's always good to know more stores. Love serenaandlily.com btw - that's how I found out about myregistry!

I LOVE that registry site. It's what I've used for my little pre-baby shopping list.

Based on the recommendations here, I decided to try wishpot.com. It was a massive FAIL! SO frustrating - it NEVER rememered me. I would sign in at the site, go to a product I wanted (on another page), have to sign in AGAIN to the pop-up, then there was an error and it wouldn't save. Every. Single. Time. I'm bummed, because I really like the idea, and used something similar for our wedding registry.

I'm using Amazon instead. *sigh*

That's so weird. Myregisty.com NEVER remembered me, but wishpot.com keeps me logged in at all times.

What OS and browser are you using?

I'm on a Mac Mini running Firefox 3.5.9. I don't have the problem with any other website. Reading their FAQ, it suggests you clear cookies and try again, but that didn't fix it

I never have a problem with myregistry remembering me on Opera or Firefox (I use both depending on my mood)...

I'm on a Mac using Safari - couldn't use myregistry.com but can use wishpot.com. Odd.

I also tried to use WishPot.com and agree that it was a fiasco! Luckily, I tried MyRegistry.com next and I LOOOVE that site. I was able to create a cash gift fund for my baby's nursery in addition to a universal registry...and yes, you can add items from any store in the world to your registry...so I had a lot of fun shopping for all of my gift items!
