No jobs for nurses: now what??? - Page 2

Congratulations Rosehip! If you don't mind me asking, what state/country? My mom is a new grad nurse (RN), and has been hitting a lot of dead ends. She actually graduated a few years ago, but had to stop work in the new grad nurse program to take care of my stepfather who was sick with cancer. Now, she's trying to get back to work, but things have gotten even worse while she was not working.

I'm actually going to forward this thread to her because it has a lot of great suggestions for how to find a job!

I have been looking in NY & CT. The offer is in NY, the other interviews have been in CT. It's tough out there. I would recommend she uses any connections she has, and just make sure everything about her resume, cover letters, etc. are absolutely perfect.

I'm getting my LPN, so that is different than the RN, but there are plenty of jobs here in MA. LPN's can no longer work in Hospitals as nurses but we can work in Prisons, Nursing homes, Home Health Care and Dr Offices. There are more jobs for LPNs than RN's right now, because th RN's are mostly given hospital jobs, while LPN's are contracted for other types of work and well, the truth is, we are cheaper.

I want to be a surgical nurse or work in the ER eventually, so I will have to get my RN, but it's easier to get into the RN program here if you are already an LPN.

sorry, love. You will find something, it just stinks to work so hard and then face a tough job market.

Interesting! Where I am the LPN's scope of practice has been increased in the hospital so that there are more LPN's (doing meds, assessments, carrying own client load etc) and less RN's on any given floor. Can I ask what general area you are from?

Hi Dandelion! We are in MA. They recently have phased LPN's out of hospitals here (within the last few years). They even went as far as to NOT grandfather the LPN's in who have worked at the hospital for YEARS. It's so insulting. LPN's have A LOT of practical experience and are great nurses. I really dont get it, but it is what it is I suppose. But because most RN's are hired in the hospitals it leaves us all the other arenas. Home health care (especially if it is specialized, g tube, Trach, paralysis, MS, and pedi care) tends to pay really well and is pretty rewarding and allows you one on one care, which I personally prefer. I am really into wound care and dressings, so Long term facilities will most likely be where I end up. Decubitus Ulcers and other types of wounds are so interesting to me. So caring and prevention of such is really my cup of tea. Hence why ER and Surgical nursing is prob where I will end up.

I have been a nurse for a while now (since 2003) and am scouting for a new job in a new state. Even for someone with alot of experience, it has been difficult. I finally got a bite in a mother-baby unit which is fantastic! I've been wanting to move to this field for a while.

The nurse manager said that most of her hires are new grads, so I am the odd man out. I don't even know if I will be hired although she was happy that I had critical care experience. Her unit is in a major university hospital and her patient population comes from states away to receive their care. Usually they are pretty sick and their MFM dept is expanding. I am really excited about shadowing.
