Baking soda--safe or not?

Is baking soda bad for teeth enamel (too rough, etc.)?

I've got problems...I can't find an allergen and ingredient ok toothpaste for one of my kids. He's using an infant xylitol gel right now but as he gets older I don't think it's getting his teeth completely clean. I think he needs more abrasion. His diet is good and he has healthy bacteria but allergy and asthma meds dry out his mouth and I think that affects plaque in a negative way.

It's not been my experience. I've used it twice a day for about 6 years and my kids have also. My dentist is really happy with my teeth, no enamel wearing or gum wearing away. The dentist that was local to us recommended baking soda based homemade powder to all his patients.
