Amazing....now what's the next step?

I started ECing DS a little less than a week ago, and he is 13 days old now. I am amazed and how the cue "pssss" gets him to pee, almost every single time! DS is a screamer during diaper changes, at least for now, and occasionally he is screaming so hard that when I try to pee him over the bowl, he won't go, probably b/c he is screaming so hard and can't hear the cue!

We haven't had much nakey time mostly because it's cold here. It actually snowed this morning! Anyway, a couple of afternoons earlier this week we would hang out in the afternoon and nurse and try to catch pees/poos. He almost always poops during bfing, though even that, I have noticed, is changing.

I've been offering upon wakening (which, he will usually pee, but often he has already wet and/or soiled his dipe when he wakes up from naps), and any time he is fussy for unexplained reasons. Because I don't always offer DURING a nursing session, I will change him immediately after he poops (though, I usually forget to cue )

I have a couple of questions:
1. When I offer and cue, he never poops, just pees, and he almost always pees. He will only poop during bf, or at another time, and I haven't figured out his cue yet. Should I be expecting to be able to cue him to poop, or will I have to wait until he no longer poops every time he feeds (and if so, when might that be?)? Or am I likely to have a baby who just poops when he eats and I'm going to have to breastfeed with a bowl between my legs for a long time?

2. What's the best way to start to go diaper free at night? We're still trying to figure out the best way to sleep at night - we cosleep, but DS likes to be snuggled up right next to me, so I'm not sure how to protect our bedding (and me!) from the spray!

I have started changing him every time he wakes at night, even though just nursing him will usually quiet him.

I'm trying to stay relaxed about all of this, but I want to eventually be able to go dipe free as much as possible. I just really don't know how you would go truly dipe free with a newborn!

Go you! It took us until 4 weeks to get cuing down. In retrospect we could've done it earlier, I just thought it'd take longer to get the connection.

I'd say it was about then (4-8 weeks or so) that the pooping settled down a bit too and I had more of an idea when she had to poop.

I'm still working on being diaper-free at night with my two year old , and she's a girl so there's no spray, but a couple thoughts for you that I plan on trying the next time around:

* put a wool or fleece blanket under the baby with a towel or prefold on top. I think a towel is better long-term because you don't have to worry so much about making sure the baby is in the exact right spot on top of the prefold.

* for the boy thing...maybe just some cotton pants? or fleece/wool longies? or even underwear? Something to stop the spray. Haven't really experimented with that one myself! LOL.

* and for both of those: have a fresh supply of towels and pants (or whatever) right next to the bed. And a laundry hamper in a different location near the bed. That way you can remove wet things, drop them in the laundry, and grab fresh things without disturbing sleep too much.

* and of course a potty bowl next to the bed too.

Good luck with the nighttime newborn EC thing! I never tried that till DD was much older...was too busy working on sleeping (which we're still struggling with ).

As far as poop, I really can't remember when that consolidated for DD (the sleep thing might have something to do with my lack of memory? ). I do remember that by three months the majority of her poops were in the toilet. So definitely by then.

Have fun! Welcome to the journey! It's a crazy ride...

Subbing.

My daughter went diaper free for a couple months when she was maybe 4-6 months old, and has gone through phases where she will wake up dry for several days (or weeks), but will always revert back to wet diapers.

How to do this with a boy though, I have NO idea.

We just took a 2 hr nap and DS was dry through the whole thing, then woke up hungry and caught pee/poo while bfing. i think that is the first time that i know of that he woke up dry from a nap! he still doesn't seem to poop on cue (i could be wrong and maybe he doesn't really have to go) but we'll get it.....

one question about nighttime ECing.....it's usually cold where i live. it's hard, if not impossible, to have a baby mostly naked at night. i suppose using little pants would be warm.....but what about a top? all baby clothes seem to be onsie-style with snaps under the crotch. is there a source for baby shirts, esp. for newborns?

also DS likes to sleep right next to me....literally his whole body touching mine. i suppose i will just have to sleep on the blanket and towel too?

for night time keeping warm, we did a long sleeved t shirt and baby leg warmers. Leg warmers are the BEST for EC!!!!!!! We also had some gowns, which I used at the point when we were using diapers at night. We did no-diaper at night from about 3-6 or 7 months, it was cool!!!! My baby pooped at night up to that point, so we did night time EC. Once she stopped pooping at night, she lost interest in EC at night and just wanted to go in the bed. Thus the diapers, and that was the next stage in our journey! Now, at 2, she'll be dry all night UNLESS she's just wearing panties. Then she'll pee. Something about the diaper reminds her not to pee, I guess! Anyway, congratulations and it sounds like you're doing great!!!!

With a boy I think I would use a prefold with a belt b/c of potential spray. (With a girl, I learned, it is possible for mom to get wet and the baby to stay dry somehow!!!!) I laid my babe on a fleece blanket on top of a prefold. She stayed on top of it for a long time, then got to the point where she'd crawl off of the prefold to pee. Again, that was time for night time diapers for us!
