I bought a small lavender plant years ago and stuck it in the ground. We have an automatic drip system so I pretty much ignored it. (This is my gardening "method," if you will. I'm in the market for a different one, however..) The good news is that years later, it's not only still alive, it's HUGE. The sprinkler head popped off and we didn't notice for several months, so it was really getting some good hydration. But no flowers at all, until this year.
I happened to notice long shoots with buds on them, and said something to DH. He said he was about to pull them all off, thinking they were weeds growing up in between the branches. (Can you tell we're not rural folk?)
Needless to say, I'm excited to see the flowers come out, but why did it take so long? And when/how can I divide the plant into smaller pieces so it doesn't overpower the bed it's in? Do I need to wait til the flowers are mature? Gone? Do it before they bloom?
