Any one like World Music?

Do any of you like what is sometimes referred to as World Music?

I don’t really like the term because I find it is a general catch-all term for non-Western music of all genres, but I don't really ahve a better term.

I noticed in the” What have you been listening to?” thread I was the only one (I think) who mentioned a group that was not English language.

I guess I am used to different music because I am a belly dancer so I listen to Arab and other types of Middle Eastern music, both traditional and pop.

But I also love Flamenco and all kinds of Latin American music in particular Cuban.

There used to be a great French language radio program here that was called “ Musique du Monde” and they played all kinds of “World” music including European like Celtic,Balkan,Klezmer. I got to know and love African artists like Youssou N'Dour (Senegal) , Salif Keita (Mali ), Amadou & Mariam ( Mali). For me this program was a feast for the ears, but they stopped the program because they got so many complaints!

So I am just wondering do any of you like World Music? And if so what types?

I like modern Indian music especially soundtracks from Bollywood films, and I like Arab/Middle Eastern music. At least once a week, I listen to something by Rachid Taha. I'm curious as to what type of Arab and ME music you like. Any CD recommendations?
I like anything with a good fast paced beat and not too mournful sounding.

The world of Arabic music is as diverse as western music. You have classic, folklore, popula,r underground, as well as all the regional styles.

I also like Rashid Taha, although his best songs are from other artists. I love Khalid and other Algerian Rai singers like Cheb Faudil Here is a clip of all three singing together:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oSCF8Bl-ys

If you like western-fusion type music you might like the beautiful voice of the Algerian singer songwriter Souad Massi

Here are snipets of a new Lebanese underground group called Y.A.S.

Probably the most well known mainstream Arabic pop singers is Nancy Ajram (Lebanese) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-8Vz6jnGAE

I love all the classics known as “Golden Age” Egyptian singers like Om Kalthoom, Abdel Halim Hafez and Farid Al Atrashe, but I must admit they take getting used to. If you are not used to this type of music I would not necessarily start with them.

Here are some examples of “Belly Dance” music” inspired by the classics: http://www.piranha.de/english/piranh...verlag/jalilah
Happy Listening!

DD loves music from other countries. That's what we call it. "World Music" sounds weird, so we call it for what it is, music from other countries. So basically stuff from outside of Canada.

DD particularly likes rap style music in other languages. She listens to Hadag Nachash a lot.

She has also developed a bad habit of singing this in one of it's forms while dancing the dance.

Most of what she listens to is really good though, I have no idea how she go into this though I strongly suspect a close friend of the family who has been known to listen to a wide range of music.

I like Loreena McKennitt, who does a lot of Celtic music. My aunt shared her with me and when I went to look her up in order to download some more of her music, I was perplexed by the "world music" genre...

Me too. Her songs are so haunting. When I listen to her music, I feel transported to a more ethereal ancient place. That's the best way I can describe it.

I love love LOVE West-African music. Songs like M'Bemba by Salif Keita give me chills even after 100 times. And artists like Youssou N'Dour, Rokia Traoré, Oumou Sangaré, Orchestra Baobab and the brand new star Fatoumata Diawara just blow my mind. I"ve been lucky enough to see several of them live, and it's beyond awesome to be at those shows where the band walks around afterward and will gracefully accept compliments and talk about what drives them and how they liked the evening.. Rajéry from Madagascar sounds a bit tame on CD, but brings down the house live. I love Southern African, some Arabic and many genres of Caribbean/Latin music as well.

I find the term 'world music' in itself pretty condescending, as if all those different genres, from Balkan to Mongolian to Indonesian to Malinese to Ethiopian to Zimbabwean to Brasilian to Jamaican to Colombian can all be caught in one word -- I really don't like everything made in the 'world outside Anglo America and Western Europe' and don't see much similarity at all. But it's always a thrill to see other people enjoying some of my favorite artists as well!

Seems like a perfect description to me. That is one of the reasons I love her music so much. Just close your eyes and you're in a beautiful otherworldly place.

I totally agree! When I started the thread I wanted to call it "Music from Outside the West" or something like that, but I felt more people would respond if I called it World Music. As I said I don't like the term. but I must say that when I listened to my favourite "World Music" program (the one that stopped because so many people complained about their tax dollars being spent on all this strange music from other countries being played on their public station ) I discovered a lot of music t hat I did not know about before.

another fan of west african music here, as well as south african. i really love caribbean music, almost all kinds (well, not the pop), but especially cuban music and ska/reggae. & Colombian music makes me need to dance.

some favorite Latin artists include afro cuban all stars, aterciopelados, ozomatli, rodrigo y gabriela. i enjoy some contemporary music from India, but i am less familiar with artists' names. i DJ Rekha and Basement Bhangra, Panjabi MC.

if you like music from the arab world, i recommend radio tarifa—spanish, playing music from the most southern region, traditional instruments. fun.

when my interest began, i would listen to putumayo compilations, then find cds from the singers i liked best.

I love everything you mentioned! Radio Tarifa is a great fusion group. Love them! Ojo's de brujo is another good Spanish fusion group. No Arabic though, they are more Flamenco mixed with hip hop.

I LOVE World Music. I'm too exhausted to list which artists I like but I'll come back to this at another time.
