Stories on CD for 4 yr old to listen to

Thread Starter
I'd like to get some stories on CD for my son's 4th birthday coming up at the end of the month. He is getting to be super imaginative and I want to encourage that with visualization stuff as well, not just reading books with pictures all the time. I would like to move towards reading longer chapter books to him too, but I figure listening to stories on CD will help with that transition and we can listen in the car and such. We have one that he has listened to for the last year or so - and it has hansel and gretel, three billie goats gruff, thumbelina, etc. Fairy Tales I guess? It's ok, he likes it, but those stories seem pretty grim and lacking the kind of moral values I'd like to instill anyway.

But, he is into dragons, dinosaurs, deep sea creatures, relationships, and really pretty much likes and follows anything with a good story line.

For the past 3 year we have been TV free. So I started listening to audio books. We listen to all kinds of books. The best thing to do is go to the library and see what you might like. We liked Little House books, Willy Wonka, Romona books, and so many more. I have to admit that some are more for me. But I do pick many from the J or YA section. If it is YA I have to be careful but I only had one problem so far. Oh, my son did like Dr. Seuss CD's.

My 4 yr old sounds a lot like yours. I noticed that his vocabulary has gotten wider and his stories are richer. So you are on the right track.

Someone told me Narnia audio books are good.

Hope that helps. Enjoy no matter what you get.

I know you are looking for a gift for a birthday, but just wanted to second what another poster mentioned - the library is a great source for audio books. Ours has a very good selection of both picture books and chapter books on CD/tape.

Favorites of my boys (ages 6 and 3) have been:
- Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web
- Stone Soup
- Make Way for Ducklings
- If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (There is a hardcover with 4 Laura Neumeroff books and the CD, with includes readings of the books and a few songs. The boys both LOVE it.)

Subbing for ideas as well! Our library has an amazing selection of audio books for children, but I've been overwhelmed by so many choices. My DS is 4 as well and loves listening to stories, but I don't want to get any that are not age appropriate.

Check out book/cd combos from Barefoot Books, like these: http://store.barefootbooks.com/catal...by_subject=158. My kids (who have been listening to these since they were 4 & 7) particularly love the knight & pirate stories.

Also, The Magic Treehouse has their popular series on cd. My kids love those too.

Jim Weiss has *wonderful* stories on cd: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...ords=Jim+Weiss

And we also like the Rabbit Ears stories on cd too: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...ds=Rabbit+Ears

I find many story cds in my library system. The kids listen to stories on cd while they do legos or wake up in the morning, and sometimes during rest time after lunch. They love them.

Shel Silverstein's Under Water Land is a great CD....it's short poems with catchy tunes and rhythm. Lots of fun.

DS who is 4.5 has just in the last weeks dove full-steam into chapter books (read by us). We haven't read a picture book since (). It's been lots of fun really. The Magic Tree house has been his favourite by far and it's a great transitional book because it has pictures on every page. My school did a play of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so we've started on that novel and it's been perfect since we had that spring board (otherwise with so few pictures I'm not sure it would have worked so well).

Love the suggestions by others, I came to post my favourite picture books on tape, so I don't have any other suggestions for you.

We've downloaded quite a bit from our library's digital audio collection, Audible, and iTunes:

Robert McCloskey collections
Curious George (original stories)
Who's in Rabbit's House (great African tale narrated by James Earl Jones)
Most of Dr. Seuss
Several Little House books
Lots of random picture books: Strega Nona, Dr. DeSoto, Where the Wild Things Are, Caps for Sale, Knuffle Bunny, Duck for President, Bear Snores On, etc.
Frog and Toad and other Arnold Lobel titles
Vera Williams Collection

DS2 is younger so some of the stories are geared toward him a little more now, but honestly they both love them all. They would listen for hours every day if they could, in addition to all the other reading we do!

We've branched into chapter books for read alouds now too, but other than for the car, I'm not sure if I'll add longer books to our audio collection yet. They still like to follow along with the picture books, and I just love revisitng all my favorites as read alouds. It's so exciting they are ready for longer, (mostly) illustration-free reads. (Former children's librarian- best part of the job!)

I just want to second Jim Weiss. He is such a wonderful storyteller. Most of his work can be found at www.chinaberry.com. My boys absolutely LOVED listening to him when they were young. We had at least 10 of his tapes. (it was the 90s

here is a link directly to all things Jim Weiss

Jim Weiss, Jim Weiss, Jim Weiss! Love him. From our local library we got the tales of Peter Rabbit narrated by Jim Weiss and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz also narrated by Jim Weiss. My 4 year old LOVED these.

Other audiobooks he has really enjoyed were Little House in the Big Woods and Farmer Boy, both by Laura Ingalls Wilder and narrated by Cherry Jones,
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach, and the Cricket in Times Square
