Recommend your rolling pin!

I had to borrow a kid one from DS's playdough tools (washed up well, of course!) this morning to make homemade cinnamon rolls, and earlier this week to make dumplings. I need one of my own.

Also, my mom used to have a tupperware mat to roll dough out on. I want something like that, but I remember hers curling at the edges because she rolled it up for storage. I came across some canvas mats which is appealing to me. Any experience with these?

I prefer a straight or tapered wooden rolling pin. Anything without handles. I have better control and I like the feel and the weight.

I had a marble rolling pin with handles and I disliked it. Too heavy, poor control.

I have a silpat mat that I use for rolling out sticky dough, but I usually prefer to roll out on the countertop.

In a pinch, a wine bottle makes a pretty good rolling pin.

I have a silpat straight rolling pin, and normally roll straight onto the counter (marble) or onto a silpat sheet. I think it works great. DP found it at TJ Maxx for about $15.

I have a solid olive wood rolling pin (it has handles but they are part of the single piece of wood). I love it; it is a good weight and the all one piece makes it easier form me to control. I usually roll directly on my granite countertop or for stickier stuff onto a large bamboo cutting board I have for the purpose. My mom has those tupperware rolling sheets too, but I never got around to buying any.

me too

I use parchment paper to roll out messy dough I have one of those plastic sheet things, but yes, it is hard to keep flat when it has been rolled up, yet too large to store flat easily.

Good idea to use a silpat!

Thanks for the recommendations! I think a little retail therapy at Williams Sonoma is in order for me this week. I like the looks of the straight and tapered wood ones.
