C-section and exercise

How soon after your c-section did you start a regular workout routine and what kind of workout did you do?

I'm 2 weeks PP after my 4th c/s (never did any "working out" following my previous three). I am going to start walking 1-2 miles tomorrow, just taking it slowly. I feel really good, so it will be difficult for me to pace myself and be slow, but I know I need to be.

At 6 weeks PP, I am going to start P90X.

O my goodness! Okay, so I feel really pathetic! I walked around the small block pushing the double stroller at 6 weeks and was shaking by the time I got back! Granted I had 11 hrs of labor before my unplanned c-section but still... Guess I just need to push myself some more!!

After c-sec #2, I was walking again by 4 weeks pp and started running again at 6.

Listen to your body though. Everyone's recovery is different.

That was me!

I took a very very long time to recover. And I worked out regularly before. At 6 weeks I could kind of walk around the block. About 8-9 weeks I could walk around the block comfortably. At 4 months I was back in the gym 100% For the record, it took me 11 months to lose the 40 pounds I gained.

Everyone is different. Listen to your body. There's no point in pushing it too soon and stalling your efforts. I also think that sleep deprivation plays a HUGE part in how quickly you are back to normal.

Don't push yourself. With c-section you loose enough blood that if you were birthing vaginally it would be considered a hemorrhage. I would not have been able to walk leisurely or for exercise at 2 weeks PP and I'd be doing good to make it up the block at 6 weeks. That is with both of my c-sections. The first was a much harder recovery. I just got certification for prenatal/postpartum yoga and the teacher there recommended 6 months before starting a normal yoga practice after a c-section. While I don't really agree with that for every person, I do believe that you must listen to your body and always remember you had major surgery. 7 layers of muscle, fat, tissue, etc... was severed for that procedure. Pushing yourself can lead to other help problems that can be nagging for years to come - like adrenal fatigue. I am 2 years PP with my last c-section. I have lost 100 pounds since the day I gave birth. I did it by listening to my body. About a year PP I was able to do Tae Bo. Before that I just walked or hiked, yoga. For about a year now, I've done nothing for "exercise" but yoga. The Tae Bo was short lived. There's time. 2 years isn't long. Take it easy one day at a time.
