I saw in Mothering mag last year there was an article on holiday crafts, i loved the idea of making a homemade advent calender with pockets to put notes in. Has anyone ever done one they would share pics or pattern or tutuorial somewhere???

I was inspired by this blog entry:

to make my own...using embroidery and applique. It was fun to do it with leftover scraps found in the leftover bin at the fabric store!

I made a advent calendar as a gift for a family last yr that really wanted one to put sayings into (as opposed to treats or candy) I used this site as reference.

http://www.quietfish.com/notebook/?p=1244

I found a online free template for envelopes and ended up tracing them onto some felt so that my envelopes would last for yrs. I ended up embroidering the numbers on them and a few little holly/berries on them for decorations (although a fabric pen or puffy paint could work as well) I then sewed them up and used fabric glue. I purchased those mini clothes pins at joanns (michaels/hobby lobby might have them as well) and then included a piece of grosgrain ribbon for their mantle. I let the mom decide what she wanted the sayings to be. I am making another this yr for another family but Im tweaking the envelopes to be mittens instead (the old fashion ones) also made from assort scrap plaid flannel fabrics as more of a countdown to christmas than an advent calendar per say.

This is the advent calendar I made: http://www.quiltinaday.com/shoponlin...play.asp?i=667 I added 23 black hooks and we added an ornament every evening after dinner, starting Dec. 1st and ending on the 23rd. We end on the 23rd because we start our Christmas celebrations on Christmas Eve.

I bought a ton and am hanging them on ribbon with clothespins (my daughter and I are going to make reindeer and various other Christmassy guys out of them). It's going to be kind of cheesy but cute, I hope. I just needed a list of projects to put in them and now I have one! AWESOME! Thanks! Of course, we won't be ice skating in Mississippi, but I can use most of the others.
