Newborn trouble nursing because one side's supply is low - help!!!

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice to give to my close friend who had her first night home from the hospital with her son last night and it didn't go very well. Thankfully, for me, I had no issues bf'ing but that leaves me with not much advice to give her....

She says that he's nursing fine for about 15 min or so on the right side but when she switches to the left, he sucks for a min or two and then throws his head back and screams—she said when she pumps from that side she has to turn it up the whole way to get milk to come out and not as much comes out (both her mother and sister said they had the same problem with one side).

So obviously it sounds like the baby is just plain hungry and wants more, but how to get him to stick it out and wait for it to come? (note: I'm not sure or not if she's actually getting a let down and it's just slow, or if she's not getting a LD at all; need to find that out)... or should she be focusing on trying to get that side to produce more?

My first thought was to tell her to 1) pump extra on that side to try to build supply and 2) feed him on that side in between feedings so that it a) builds supply and b) that he won't be as hungry so hopefully won't be as angry?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!! Thank you!!
