need advice on moving to maine vermont area, please.

My family and I have been looking a long time to move to the mountains and start homesteading on a nice piece of land. We have been looking for a community or other families to buy land with and start building. Unfortunately, it seems like this is easier said than done. I was wondering if any of you could give me advice on places in maine or vermont that you know may have good prices on acreage 10+ or so, is in the mountain areas but still land enough for gardening, and is around like minded folks such as homeschooling, environmentalists, artsy, biodynamic farming.
We would love to even share some land or rent and live in our yurt and start building an earth bermed home. Just wondering if any of you may have some advice or leads that could help us.

we live in rutland county, vt and really like it... lots of like-minded folks--growing food, homeschooling, etc. and you can find some decent priced land, especially if you aren't looking for a farm set-up and are looking to start from scratch...

we also love the area west of belfast maine... seems like there are some deals around there and some small farmsteads--not sure about homeschooling/etc but we love that area.

vermont's a small state--you could see a lot of it by visiting for a few days and just driving around the state...seeing all the small communities and checking out properties.

I concur that the Belfast area is a great area to look in Maine. Very crunchy friendly! I immediately thought of Appleton though, with the ridge, you'll get that mountain feel and land is pretty reasonable. (while Maine has a lot of mountains, I'm not sure that many people live on them, really)
