reinfection of strep throat question

I had strep and just finished my 10 day course of abx. I felt better on the 3rd day of abx. 2 of my children also had it. My youngest finished his course yesterday and my oldest still has a few days left.

My throat is sore again. I thought you weren't contagious after being on abx for 24-48 hours. My kids have taken a few sips out of my drinks using the same straw. I figured it would be okay since they were past the 24-48 hours after starting their abx and I was still taking my abx.

I'm worried. I got super sick. My kids barely had scratchy throats. I took them in because my youngest slept until 10:30 AM one morning and my oldest had a hoarse voice.

I'm hoping I'm okay. I don't want to have to take another course of abx (I had amoxicillin)

Has anyone dealt with a reinfection? If it gets worse I'll go back to the doctor tomorrow.

This is so weird because I was just reinfected with strep.

I came down with strep 2 weeks ago, got really sick because for some reason it went into my blood stream and I started to go septic, had several days of antibiotic shots, an antibiotic IV, fluids, and also a 6 day course of antibiotic super pills. A day after I finished the pills, it came back. This time it didn't go systemic and I didn't go septic but I am back on the antibiotics and have to do a 10 day course this time.

I know no one who has strep and none of my family got it. Sorry - guess that didn't answer your question! For myself, I think I must have reinfected myself with my toothbrush.

I hope you feel better soon.

I had strep twice in 6 months this past year. I said this on another thread, but I've heard from nurses all over the country that strep is really, really bad this year. Lots of ER cases were strep-related. The 2nd case I had, it was just really bad throat pain (bad enough that I couldn't swallow, it brought tears to my eyes), but the first, I sounded like Marge Simpson with laryngitis, right along with the terrible throat pain, swollen glands, fever, aches, even my eyes hurt. So I can sympathise with you. Strep is some nasty, nasty stuff, especially this year (I haven't had strep since I was FIVE!!!).

I hope you feel better soon.

I had strep throat a LOT...it started about 2 years ago and I got it about every 3-4 weeks for a whole YEAR, so 12 times or so in a row. I don't know if it was coincidence or what, but it finally stopped when I started gargling with hydrogen peroxide. I soaked my toothbrush in it too.

In your case, it is also possible that the antibiotic wasn't strong enough to kick it completely too. You might need something stronger.

my strep test was positive. They've put me on augmentin this time instead of amoxicillin.

My gut is not happy.
