Raw butter question

Thread Starter
I bought some raw butter from the farmer I buy my raw milk from last week. I've made butter using his cream, but this is the first time I've bought butter from him. It has a very distinct sour smell, which I can't get past. I know it's probably because the buttermilk wasn't rinsed completely out of the butter, but I'm wondering if it's ok to eat. I'm pregnant, and the smell of it is really bothering me. It was $10 for 1 pound, so I've got to figure out a way to use it. Tips? Advice?

I would say the butter is past. I make our own raw butter and when it's freash it doesn't smell sour at all. $10.00/lb seems expensive. I don't know if you'd actually get "sick" from eating it but it wouldn't taste good.

is it cultured butter? cultured butter does sometimes taste a little sour, though I don't think it smells sour. If it SMELLs sour, I'd talk to the farmer and ask if that's normal. If it is normal, then maybe.... whip some herbs and stuff into it...? I can't think of anything other than cooking with it...

We get butter from our raw milk people and it's sometimes like that too. We use it anyway, it just tastes funny. I figured it was just because it was cultured ???
