Have you ever used an auction house

to get rid of stuff?

Just curious,
I emailed a local place. I am hoping if they will pick it up and sell it for me, even though I'd pay a commission, it'd still be better than trying to sell it myself and two of the items are very heavy -a cherry triple dresser and a maple bureau on my second floor

I tried selling a nice boot bench on craigslist, relatively cheaply and the people who responded were a pita and waste of my time- I still have the bench in fact lol

Anyhow, I was wondering if auctioning it off would save me the hassle and hopefully still earn me some money, while getting the items OUT

Any experiences?

yes, it does.

when we moved, to get rid of the final things, we took whatever remained and piled it up. the auction house came and got it, and then took care of it. we got a check some months later (it went up with a lot of other similar items). and the feel was comparatively nominal.

and ours did do the pick up and everything.

also, my MIL does this with any home after the person dies. she went through 3 in 3 years (third one was GMIL, who went into care and has not passed). essentially, she declutters, picks what she wants, and then the whole house and all the contents go to auction. it's actually pretty straight forward.

We went the route of auction house upon returning Stateside and seeing just how much stuff was in storage and unmissed for those 3 yrs (some of it nice - Lane recliner, very good treadmill, furniture, etc. and then plenty of odds and ends). Unfortunately for us, it was a slow night at the auction house and we ended up getting less than $200 if memory serves Ergh! However, we were working on limited time, NO storage, and NO space in the new house, so at least we made a little something. No regrets in that realm - it was done at least!

Thanks for your input

I was thinking it would be hit or miss financially, but so is craigslist ~with alot more hassle (I"ve had good luck giving things away for free on craigslist but the items I'm thinking of releasing now I'd like to get some cash for~ and they are heavy)

They are mostly storage pieces, and I've come to the conclusion that the way my brain works, I can never find anything, I am too visual and I move things around too much...so I am hoping to have some built-ins made with basic shelves ~and doors to hide the contents but that once open, I can see what's in there! Those might not solve my problem either but I think built-ins are really nice LOL

Another thing that is spurring me on, is that every time I move furniture my back bothers me, and I want to get these out before I really hurt myself.
Some of the pieces I haven't liked for a long time eihter, so I want to free myself that way as well

I have not heard back from the auction house yet, but if they'll pick it up, I am going to give it a shot
Thanks again

PS there was a show on hgtv that was doing this with auctions but I cannot remember the name of it and don't know if they cancelled it, but I am thinking on the same lines, sell what I don't want/use/need to get what I really want/need...and it'll buy me space, if not actual money
