Help - baby crawled out of bed

I have a 10 mos old and we've been co-sleeping after his first waking at night (10 or 11ish). My husband comes to bed later and leaves early in the morning so we've been doing a pillow barricade. Well, this morning, my son crawled over the pillows and landed on the floor. He is okay (actually, way better than I expected - he only cried for a few minutes and no bleeding) but I'd like to avoid a repeat.

Any suggestions? I think he would climb over bed rails too but maybe not. We can't push the bed against the wall due to the room layout (nor can we sidecar due to layout). Ideally, I'd also prefer not to put the mattress on the floor as we're trying to sell the house but I know that might be the only option.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, we put our bed on the floor. We also did not do a pillow barricade, and my daughter figured out after the second time that she did not like that scary 4 inch fall She's so persistent that I'm learning that I have to let her learn for herself with many things. Now she carefully climbs down. I've known kids who's parents taught them around that age to turn around and scoot off butt first, but my daughter cannot figure it out for some reason!

DD (10 months on Sat) has just learned to turn and scoot off feet first. We do spend a lot of time on the bed playing and reading, so she has had a lot of exposure.

What we do (she and I cosleep alone) - on her side of the bed is a bedbug bumper. She snuggles it, to sleep, and has never tried to go over it in her sleep.

On my side of the bed, when I am not there, I put a rolled up rug. It is rough side out, and so if she gets up against it she moves away.

At that age, we had to get a crib to keep DD from crawling off our bed. Mostly for naps and the early part of the evening, after she'd gone to be but before DH and I were ready to sleep. It's an IKEA Gulliver crib that is low to the ground, and we just put it right next to the bed.

She never crawled out of the bed once we were in it, because she'd stick to me like a magnet. I did get a Tres Tria pillow, so that I could have her sleep on either side of me without worrying about her falling out. It's like a big latex speed bump that fits under your fitted sheet. She's never crawled over it.

I have the same problem now, my ds just turned 12 months and has actually just started squriming around on the bed and trying to crawl to the edge. I was looking into side rails. how is the bed bug? how tall is it? do you think that a toddler would be able to crawl over it? Thalia how did you like the tres tria pillow? Doesn it take up alot of room?

We put the base of our bed on the floor and then taught Ella to get off backwards. We also have the bed against the wall. I wouldn't spend any money to solve the problem as before long your bubba will be able to get off the bed and out the door with not problem. We just listen out for her and she usually cries before she gets moving. The bedroom is pretty safe and so is the house. But I have been in the kitchen and she has crawled through the door as she has finished her nap. It is actually really lovely that she can do that. The other option is to put her to sleep on a single or cot mattress on the floor and then move to the main bed when you want to sleep together. I want to move her into a mattress beside our bed once she takes up too much room in our bed, which seems to be happening sooner rather than later.

We had a crib sidecar (one of the crib sides removed, crib pressed up against grow-up bed). At around 9-10mo our son learned to turn and lower himself off the bed. But it did take falling off once or twice.
