Milk allergy symptoms confusing, please help

DD is breastfeeding and allergic to milk. At first her symptoms were itchy rash on face and ears and mucus in her poo. She's had milder rashes since I stopped milk over 3 months ago. Thought possibly due to soy? Well, just 2 weeks ago I tried butter, and her poo went back to mucus. She's had a "cold" since I tried the butter. Just the past two days I've had products with milk ingredients and she's not had any reactions except this "cold". I'm just wondering if the cold could be allergies, but then why isn't she getting the mucus in the poo symptom. Could it be that it truly is a cold and she can tolerate milk as an ingredient but not straight?

It sounds to me like she's reacting to dairy, and probably still to something else in your diet as well. Soy would be the most likely culprit, if you are still on that. Gluten and corn would be the other two "top 4" intolerances.

Reactions can change over time, so what you're looking for is no symptoms .

What were the milk products? It's possible it's just a cold, but if you had butter and she reacted, then having other things with milk in them is just prolonging it. She may not be reacting completely because it was a smaller amount.

My younger son can tolerate whey in things, but nothing straight. If casein is just an ingredient, he reacts right away. And his cold type symptoms are always a result of ingesting something with casein. Soy also does the same thing to him.

The products were something(sodium?) lactate (that was in the hot dog), I don't normally eat hot dogs it was a rare occasion. And the buns- sweet dairy whey. I also had some penut butter cookies which had an allergy warning for milk at the bottom, but I couldn't identify the ingredient in the list. I figure they were just being cautious because of contaminant possibilities.

---Calcium or Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate – Stearoyl lactylates are derived from the combination of lactic acid (See any potential concerns with lactic acid below) and stearic acid. They are generally considered non-dairy and safe for the lactose intolerant and milk allergic (again, see below). However, the stearic acid may be animal derived, which could be a concern for vegans.

--Calcium, Sodium, or Potassium Lactate - Lactates are salts derived from the neutralization of lactic acid, and are rarely a dairy concern. For example, it was noted that the lactate found in one brand of orange juice was made from sugar cane.

It was probably the whey. I am allergic to milk and I react to whey and casein.

The thing is, that she didn't react to the cookies and hot dog in her usual way. I'm just not sure about this cold she's had. Most of the family has had strep throat, so I'm hoping it's just a cold thats lingering.

Well, those products didn't have whole milk in them, they had low levels of parts of milk (e.g. whey). So I'd expect a different and/or lesser reaction than when you consume whole dairy, casein, or a higher volume of milk.

It seems like you got a pretty clear reaction two weeks ago when you tried butter, and her normal "first line" reaction (mucous poo). The stuffy nose could be cold or dairy reaction. You might see itchy rash if you kept consuming dairy (sometimes it takes a while to build up to all the reactions). But the butter sounds pretty clear, so you know she still reacts to that. The "cold" might be sickness or a new reaction. She *may* not react to small quantities of milk derived products that don't contain casein. But I don't think you have any evidence so far she doesn't react to milk. Sorry .

I think your right, but she did have mucus in her poo today, I just posted too soon. I just hope her nose clears up soon, it makes nursing painful.
