I purchased a jar of organic virgin, unrefined coconut oil from a health food store. I think it was their house brand because there was no brand name on the jar and the jar could be returned for a deposit.

Anyway, we’ve been using the jar slowly and it’s probably a year old. It’s below the ¾ mark and this weekend I discovered what looks like mold inside the bottom of the jar. It's sorta black/grey/green with a wet sand look. Doesn’t smell good either. Was I supposed to refrigerate this oil? Is it common to go moldy?

My husband makes soap sometimes and uses coconut oil (from GloryBee) and he pulled out a never been opened gallon container. For us to use in cooking. It’s in a food grade container but says it’s for skin and soap… is it ok to cook with? I am thinking yes, since it’s just plain coconut oil.

Thanks for your comments!
