Can paps and GTT be refused with an OB?

Hi mamas,

Can I refuse a pap during pregnancy? And while I'm at it, GTT?

I much prefer the way MWs do it, but cannot use one this time, so I want to keep testing to a minimum.

You should be able to. Congrats on your new pregnancy!!

I didn't do the glucose test with pg #2 since it made me horribly dizzy and nausaeus when I did it with pg #1. I plan to "decline" it this time around as well.

As far as I'm concerned you can refuse anything! I myself just posted a question how many do refuse the pap since I don't want one as well, and it seems as if the consensus is that it is not really necessary, and even if they come up with something then they wouldn't treat until the baby came out anyway.

Sure can. I'm seeing a family doc, not an OB. At my first visit, w/o asking she told me to take of my clothes so we could do a pap/breast exam. I asked her if we would do treatment if they found anything wrong, and she said unless it was very major, we would wait until after I gave birth. So I declined. I questioned the GTT and she told me how important it is for me to be tested etc....etc..., but said "As always, it is your choice." She gave me the lab form and said for me to make an appointment if I decide to do it. She thinks I am nuts to not want to use a Doppler lol, but old me to bring my fetoscope next time and she will give it a try. I don't want to be weighed either, and she has been nice about that too. I am actually finding this to be a very good experience for me...using my big girl voice and all that .

Nobody can force you to have a medical procedure done.

With previous midwives they had always recommended a pap and I consented because I had bigger wars with them to win. But with my current one they told me (which I already knew) that a pap during pregnancy is pretty pointless. They are inaccurate and in most cases treatment would be postponed until after pregnancy anyway.

I'm seeing an obstetrician. He's been pretty great. So far I haven't had a pap smear, any STD testing, the GTT, and he listens to the baby with a stethoscope (not fetoscope) instead of the dopplar. I think he's kind of amused by my prenatal requests. He's definitely a mainstream doctor but maybe he's tired of doing all prenatals the same.

He just kind of shrugs when I ask for something unusual.
It helps that I'm not at risk for anything so far.

Yes you can refuse anything/everything.
