teething toys

Amber necklaces, wooden teething toys (found some on etsy.com), etc.,. What do you all recommend? DS#2 is drooling and nawing on his fingers (and mine as well) constantly. Is he too young for an amber necklace or wooden teething toy? What is the benefit of an amber necklace?

I have both, and my girl's younger than your boy! But she's been showing lots of early teething signs, so I figured we'd give it a go. I have no idea if the amber necklace works or not, since I don't think she's actually ready to cut any teeth, but it looks cute on her.

I got some beautiful wooden teethers from Etsy while I was pregnant. So far, she seems to enjoy gumming one while I hold it for her, she's definitely still too young to hold toys herself.

we love our Haba teethers. kathe kruse makes some nice ones too. nuby makes some bpa free ones you can freeze. a piece of ice with a wash cloth around it, secured by a hair tie works for us too! HTH

When my DS was first teething at 2 months, I found that Sophie the Giraffe actually worked best. Everything else was too big to fit into his poor little mouth! Now that he's a bit bigger, he also likes to gnaw on some wooden toys (specifically a Haba teething rattle, and a Camden Rose cherry rattle).

When the teething is really bad, we take an ice cube from our water bottle ice cube tray, and give it to him wrapped in a baby face cloth. The shape makes it much easier for him to handle than regular ice cubes.

Sophie The Giraffe is Kieran's favorite. He will chew on her knobbly head for a long time!
He also likes the Haba teethers, and a wash cloth works well, but Sophie wins out over anything else we've tried.

Amber is NOT for chewing on; get one that's short enough for baby to leave it alone, with a breakaway clasp. The baltic amber has a special oil that rubs off when warmed on the skin and provides pain relief. It certainly helped DD and many friends commented their kids would go get their necklaces to wear when they started to cut a new tooth

We're getting a Sophie giraffe this time, everyone seems to love that. Safe rubber.

We use an amber necklace to relieve pain. It does seem to help if she wears it consistently.

She finally is able to get things in her mouth and keep them there at nearly 5 months. She loves her Sophie the Giraffe toy and a great german BPA free plastic teether that can be cooled in the fridge.

we have an avent one that's bpa free, it's shaped like an oval. That one is pretty good for us. We had a raspberry, but it has been lost, and wasn't ever quite so interesting for dd.
we have some really nice wooden (maple) ones that she likes, too.
Best of all has been putting an ice cube in the mesh feeder. When she was younger, we used a breastmilk cube.

thanks! I am such a sucker for suggestions-
I just ordered a sophie the giraffe I'm like (lol) omg my 3 month old NEEDS a sophie the giraffe.
anyway- it does look cool!

ds has two of the nuby ones and likes them both. also loves his sophie, so much that she made an appearance in some portraits lol

Lyra loves her Sophie, too.
I wet washcloths and put them in the freezer, and we have lots of Nuby toys, which are fun as well as functional.

My DS, who's 7 1/2 months old and has 2 top teeth coming through, loves any toy from Vulli (Sophie the Giraffe, etc.). However, I have to keep a close eye on him when he's gumming the legs - the legs tend to be too long for his mouth and he gags himself. Other toys that he likes (I find that he likes to switch toys around) are any teethers from Under The Nile. They're cloth teethers, so all you have to do is soak it in water and freeze them. He also has some Maple Landmark wooden teethers, Haba bee clutch ring, Sigikid, Natursutten Apple/Fish teethers, and DANO2 teething rings. I may have gone overboard in buying teething toys, but we wanted to cover all the bases.

Thanks for these great suggestions on the teethers. My DD is almost 6 mos old and is drooling like a waterfall. Other than Sophie the Giraffe, are there other BPA free teethers that are a bit cheaper and are just as safe?

the nuby teethers mentioned up thread are $5 at target and are bpa free

One of my DS's favorite teethers for his first teeth was a peeled cold carrot. It was long so he could hold it but pretty fat so he couldn't gag himself with it. Once he got teeth, he could scrape/bite pieces off so they went by the wayside. I tried celery too but he seemed to prefer carrot. Once he got more teeth, the handle of a wooden spoon became the preferred teether. Be prepared for a long wait. DS started drooling and chewing at 2 months but didn't get any teeth until 5.5 months.
