Road trip food ideas?

So we (me, dh, 8yo, 5yo, & 1yo) are going on a big road trip soon. We'll be driving for 3 days (with lots of stops and sightseeing) and then spending several days with family. Then another day of driving to see more family for several days, and then 2-3 days driving home. I don't want to spend a ton on food and I don't want us all eating junk the whole time. So, I'd like ideas of things we can bring along/make ahead of time. We'll probably bring a medium sized cooler. I plan to bring bread and pb&j, maybe some hummus, veggies, crackers. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Ooh, I love roadtrips! So much fun. I bring things like sandwich ingredients, raw fruits and veggies, homemade trail mix, popcorn (we have a popcorn maker so it isn't bagged stuff with fake butter), fruit leathers/dried fruit, and my boyfriend likes meat jerky. :P

We just did this in May - in addition to sandwiches (we did pb, no jelly also some sandwich meat), we did popcorn, jerky, nuts (peanuts and almonds), apples, grapes, string cheese, raisins, oranges, yogurt (I did get the junky/candy kind in a tube and froze it), muffins (blueberry and cinnamon streusel) and some trail mixes. We really didn't spend that much on food during our entire trip. Have fun!

I just found a coupon for yogurt in a tube - I don't usually buy it, but it would be ok for a fun road trip treat. And I didn't think about muffins. How would you store them so they wouldn't get yucky in the car, in the cooler? Frozen first?

Thanks! Any more ideas?

We don't buy it either - it's strictly vacation food for us, and the kids are thrilled with the novelty of it I like it that it freezes well - helps keep the cooler cold for a little longer.

The muffins - I put them in a ziplock bag (which I wouldn't do again - they turned to crumbs by day 3). I had intended to freeze half of them, but forgot to throw them in the freezer the night before we left. I didn't put them in the cooler because we had no room. I didn't have any problems with them getting weird in the car (I was worried about that though) - I just made sure to keep them out of the sun and had no problems.
