changing sizes for crochet patterns

Does anyone have a method to change the size while using a pattern? There is a baby dress I'd like to make big enough for a toddler, and a 3 yr old size dress that would be about the right size except I have worsted weight yarn instead of sport weight. I could probably figure something out, but it would take lots of trial and error (emphasis on error). If there's a method it would save me tons of time that I really can't afford to waste.

I can't help but I would love to know the answer because I have tons of cute patterns for babies that would be adorable if I could only up size them to a 2T or 3T.

I usually just use the same basic pattern but add or subtract stitches where I need them. Just take a similar garment in the size you want to make your crochet piece and use that as your 'guage'. If that makes any sense at all.

I often will use a larger or smaller hook than the pattern calls for, and it has worked out well every time so far.
