Organizing kid toys by day...has anyone ever tried this?

My DD is almost 4 and she has way too many toys! Every birthday and holiday we are drowning in toys...and they are nice toys too for the most part, like wooden puzzles and play sets DD really enjoys.

I've been brainstorming up ways to organize her room because it's small and resembles a terrible walk-in-closet jammed with toys. It's a huge source of frustration for me and for her as a result...

Do you think it would be a good idea to get those big plastic totes and organize them as one tote for each day, rather than sorting her things by type? I'm thinking of putting a handful of books, a couple puzzles, a coloring book and/or craft supplies, a game, and a couple of play sets or toys into each one. (I might even go as far as to put a label with contents on them so we can find something specific if we need to.) That way we could pull out a new box every few days and it would be filled with stuff to do. I have a newborn, so this will also help cut down on the stress of occupying DD and then cleaning up a billion toys each day.

We'll probably leave out her staple toys--a wooden castle with figurines, the Little People bin, a couple dolls, and her art drawer with pens, coloring, and notebooks.

Has anyone tried anything like this before? I want to be sure it's a good idea before I go through all of the trouble!

I am in the process of trying this out. So far, I really like it. I separated her things out into 6 different bins, some by type (e.g., she likes playing with all her stuffed cats together, so they all went in together), but then with, say, her puzzles, those are all in different bins so she always has one out. I do have a list going of what's in each bin, mostly because I also want to cut down on the number of toys she has, and I think having fewer out at a time will make it easier to see what she does and doesn't play with (so when I switch the bins, I'm marking things she didn't play with).

I was unsure of how to go about doing it, so kept putting it off. Then some other decluttering cleared up a couple of bins, and I happened to read a post on a homeschooling blog about their toy rotation as I was trying to figure out what to do with them, so I just went for it. I really didn't spend a lot of time on it, and I didn't do it all at once, just filled one or two bins a day during DD's nap time. I figure I can change it as we go and I see how it works. Though like I said, so far I am liking it - makes cleaning up a lot easier, and already she is rediscovering things that usually got passed over when everything was out.

I actually tried this a few months ago- split all the toys into 3 different large bins. What I've noticed is that we don't even miss the stuff in the 2 other bins! (Think I need to purge them, but will probably not be able to resist the urge to look what is in there before donating!)
