brownish patches on baby's skin

My ds is 10 weeks and yesterday I noticed tan/light brown discoloration on his skin on his upper thigh and lower abdomen. There are 3 noticeable patches, 2 around 1 1/2 inches long and the other the size of a quarter. Anyone have anything like this happen before?

Can you take a picture?

My ds has one on his buttock. I didn't notice it till he was maybe 5 months old, but it could have always been there. Its quite light. I assumed it was just a "normal" birthmark sort of thing. Its not like a mole though or like a stork bite or wine stain. . .definitely just a little tan patch. About the size of a nickel I'd say. I plan to ask about it at our next Ped appt, but I'm not worried.

I tried taking a picture but it didn't turn out good enough. My friend is a NICU nurse and she looked at it today. She said it almost looks like a birthmark but not. I have an appt on Monday. If it wasn't so big (about a 4 in area now) I wouldn't be so concerned but it's not only large but getting bigger each day, slowly so we think Monday will be soon enough. Maybe it's a late blooming birth mark but no one else in either family has one like this. We'll see. Thanks for your replies.

Our ped said if what my ds has was small like a nickel she'd just watch it. But, since ds's has grown even in the last 24 hrs and is now about 5 in circumference, she wants him seen by a ped dermatologist. Thinks it's a birthmark but wants to make sure especially since it's up around his groin now. We'll see.

Hope you get some answers soon mama. Yeah, my DS mark hasn't changed at all. .. I would be worried if it was growing as yours is. Hopefully, it is just a birthmark for you and the spreading will stop soon. Hugs!

Thanks! My ped, whom I LOVE, was very reassuring and said she's only sending us to the derm as a precaution, she's not really concerned about it being anything serious, thankfully!

Just FYI for anyone interested, we had an appt with the big specialist today and it's definately a cafe au lait birthmark but thankfully not the kind (not 100% but most likely) associated with syndromes or neurological issues. He said it will continue to grow but should stay in the same area. Ds may need testing as an adult before having kids in case the affected tissue mutates into his testes because that could cause a genetic mutation in his children. BUT, that's way far off so right now I'm just grateful that the news was so good!

wow, what a relief for you! Great news!

Glad it seems to be ok! I have like 3 or 4 cafe au lait spots, I didn't even know what they were called until a few years ago and had no idea they were associated with any sort of disorders either.
