Read this book! It is SO good and helpful if you are trying to raise civil children without the use of punishment. Sorry I don't have the author handy, but it's called "The Secret of Parenting". I have read a LOT of parenting books, and was almost about to give up on not using time outs, etc, then I found this book. It saved our punishment free family!!

In the middle of the book and wondering about the stopping of behaviour. Do you really just ask them to stop and if they don't you just sit and wait, like the example of the tapping of the fork on the table at a restaurant?

This was the best parenting book I've read. It really helped when ds was in his ultra-whiny obnoxious phase. Dh and I aren't into the woo-type books, so this was perfect for us. It comes across as written by a sensible, funny smart person we'd like to hang out with (as opposed to someone who sounds like she comes from Planet Rainbow Unicorn)

yes, and it really works!! They really don't like that "I'm waiting here and am not happy about it" thing....
